Description
Class Experience
Not all essays in college are research papers, but when it is time to write a research paper, the stakes can feel really high! This class is all about preparing students for the research writing process. Participants will be more prepared for their composition courses AND the classes within their major. This class introduces how to find and analyze scholarly sources, how to cite sources using MLA style, and how to create a Works Cited page. Here is a simplified overview of the course...
This class is taught in English.
Participants will learn how to ask a good research question, find scholarly sources, analyze those sources, organize a paper around a thesis, integrate sources into MLA in-text citations, and create a Works Cited page.
I was an English professor for 11 years. After receiving tenure and being promoted to Associate Professor of English, I decided to step away from higher education and become an independent educator and full-time writer. However, I never got burnt out on teaching composition! It is a wonderful and important subject! I have been teaching on Outschool since February 2020.
Most work will be conducted in class. From week to week, there may not be any outside classwork. However, students will be conducting research and writing 1 essay, and this typically takes a few hours to complete, outside of class time.
Students will not need any special supplies for this course.
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
I am happy to provide an assessment that meets the needs of each participant. Please reach out to let me know what assessment you need. I will be providing written feedback to all students on their work, regardless of other assessment tools.
50 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
Students will be discouraged from researching topics that may be triggering or upsetting to other learners in the class.
Students will find a lot of their own sources; they will be able to use Google Scholar as their main research tool. We will use the Excelsior OWL for citation guidance.
