The purpose of this class is to create a fun reading club where students may practice specific reading comprehension skills.

In this on-going class, students will practice various reading comprehension skills. Using a book of their choice, they will share what they learned while reading the book based on the reading comprehension skill we are targeting that week. There are not any weekly assignments other than reading a book of your choice so that you can share about your book. Students have the option to write their comprehension response down before class so they know what they are sharing, but are not required. You can even use a book that you had to read for another class! I recommend reading fiction books as these will more naturally work for our reading comprehension strategies, but non-fiction is fine as well. Here is a break down of the next few weeks:

Week 1: Making Connections- What connections did you have to the story?
Week 2: Asking Questions- What questions did you ask while reading?
Week 3:Inferring- What inferences did you make while reading?
Week 4: Visualizing- What did you visualize while reading
Week 5: Summarizing- Share a short 1-2 paragraph summary of what you read.
Week 6: Thoughtful Predictions- Predict what might happen next!
Week 7: Wild Card- Pick your favorite reading comprehension skill this week!
Week 8 and beyond- repeat each comprehension strategy with a new book.

Each class will include a brief review of the weekly reading comprehension skill followed by group discussion. Students will practice the skill using their book of choice. It will be largely student directed as they take turns practicing the skill.

It is recommended though not required that students take my other one time Reading Comprehension courses to better understand these reading comprehension skills. They can still pick up the skill in class if they have not attended the one time course for that week's skill. If you're interested in the one time courses, please check out the following classes on my profile: Making Connections, Asking Questions, Inferring, Visualizing, and Summarizing.

I have taught in elementary school for 15 years and I am certified in Pre-K through 5th grade. I am very experienced and am prepared to help your child improve their reading skills!

Our goal in this class is to encourage a love of reading by discussing our reading comprehension skills with our favorite books! See you soon!
