In this Multi-Day class, students will meet for a total of 3 classes. They will participate visually and tactually to learn basic math skills and concepts using the 100 bead abacus. They will think they are simply playing with a toy and having fun with numbers but secretely I will be laying the ground work for higher level math skills and number sense. Students will develop their math skills by counting (by 1's, 2's, 5's, 10's, and 100's!), regrouping (exchanging beads), practicing their "10 friends", place value to 100, and how to "set" and "clear" numbers on the abacus. By the end of Day 3, learners will have a better understanding of all of these concepts and should be able to add single digit numbers (with regrouping), add 2 digit by 2 digit, and 3 digit by 3 digit numbers (without regrouping). And... of course, math these days is all about application, not just calculations, so we will have some silly made up "story problems" for learners to solve. Students can use their imagination to help create these "problems"!
Students will participate visually and tactually to improve their basic math skills and concepts by manipulating the beads on a 100 bead abacus.100 Bead Abacus Pen/Pencil Scratch Paper Each student will need a 100 bead abacus. Typically referred to as a "Toy Abacus". The abacus should have 10 rows with 10 beads in each row. The color of beads does not matter.
