Class Experience

Students who have already learned how to navigate and use code.org, but want more of a challenge, can join the ongoing club.
Coding allows learners to practice social emotional skills as well as coding concepts. Each week, students will be given a task that includes one social emotional goal and one coding goal.

Please note, the Wednesday class is made up of kids who are working on Code.org sprite lab, and in the Thursday class we are working on Scratch right now. Both are at beginning level.

Each class will be structured the same way:

15 minutes - introduction of kids/Boomer, social emotional skill, coding concept and explanation of the task to be completed using a
       google slides presentation.
20 minutes - work time- students will work on their own device on code.org or to complete the assigned task.
Tasks will include creating something by coding with sequencing, conditionals, events, and loops.
Tasks will also include social emotional skills such as mindfulness, resilience, emotion management, feelings, self-esteem,
friendship, collaboration, communication, balance, empathy, problem solving, and relationships.
10 minutes - share creation. If the class is large, student will be split into groups (breakout rooms) to present to a smaller group.
This gives them more time to share.

I have been teaching on Outschool since April of 2020 and am an elementary school educator who knows how to create hands on activities which empower thriving children of all ages.

I specialize in providing a vast variety of hands on activities that promote the value of social and emotional intelligence as well as the importance of showing children their potential. There is not always a right answer in learning, children thrive in all different ways and I find great joy in helping them discover their gifts and talents.

Over the course of 25 years in the classroom, I have taught 1st grade, kindergarten through 3rd grade media literacy classes, and kindergarten through 5th grade computer application classes. I have also tutored kindergarten through 5th grade students in all subject areas and am TESOL certified. I am an advocate for children and believe in helping them to reach their potential, while understanding all of our minds think differently. Being able to discover how each person finds success is such a gift.

I am a proud owner of Boomer, my Labrador Retriever. He loves to be by me all the time and wants to be part of my teaching. Pets bring such joy and unconditional love, that it just seems natural to involve him in my classes. He has a lot to teach and learn!
