In this highly engaging and interactive ongoing class, learners (ages 14 - 18) gain confidence as they practice public speaking and communication skills with a popular TED speaker, speech and theater teacher, and public speaking coach.

  • * Students will gain conversation and public speaking confidence. * Students will organize their ideas for a speech using an outline. * Students will master public speaking skills for delivery a quality speech (volume, tempo, eye contact, vocal variety, gestures, etc.). * Students will practice delivery of different types of speeches (demonstration, persuasion, impromptu, storytelling, etc.). * Students will provide one another with positive speech feedback.
My name is Dr. Julie Connor and I am a confidence builder.  I help youth and adults discover their unique voice and courage to share it with others. I am a seasoned public speaking teacher and coach.  I prepare youth to compete in local and national speech competitions as a speech and debate contest judge.  I am also a TED speaker and author.  My education and experience includes:

* Doctorate in Education (Ed.D.) - Educational Leadership
* Education Specialist (Ed.S.) - Education Administration / Elementary & Secondary Ed.
* Master of Science in Education (M.S.) - Curriculum & Instruction
* Bachelor of Science in Education (B.S.) - Elementary Education (K-8)

Details: Learners will (1) practice public speaking skills and (2) review how to prepare an outline for each speech during class time. The teacher will provide an outline for speech preparation as well as sample outlines for every speech. The speech outline will be completed by learners as homework to prepare for their speech presentations. The teacher will provide written feedback and consultation with students who want to prepare and rehearse specific speeches upon request. Outlines can also be used to provide grades for children and teens enrolled in homeschool programs or for students who want to take this course for class credit. Please contact me regarding homework grades for public speaking credit.
Assessment
Frequency: Available upon request
Details: In-Class Assessments include discussion, thumbs up / thumbs down, brainstorming, read aloud sharing, step-by-step check-ins of the outline progress throughout the class, guided practice to check for understanding, independent writing practice; self-assessment, positive feedback to and from students in the class
Grading
Frequency: Available upon request
Details: No grades are offered for students who are enrolled in this class to increase their public speaking confidence, prepare a speech for a specific event, or for personal enjoyment. Grades can be provided for parents with children and teens enrolled in homeschool programs or for students who want to take this course for class credit. I have BS, MS, EdS, and doctoral degrees in elementary and secondary education with additional teaching certifications in English/language arts, communication arts, speech & theater, and science education. Please contact me regarding grades for public speaking credit.
Participants should have basic English speaking  and writing skills.  

This class is designed to help learners:

* strengthen their public speaking skills
* organize ideas and create a speech outline
* practice conversation skills

* "My Speech Outline" worksheet (provided to students before class) * Speech outlines designed specifically for each week's topic will be provided to students before assigned speeches * Pencil or pen
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
