 Week 1
Lesson 1
An Introduction and Where Poems Hide- Finding Inspiration
This time we introduce the steps of writing poetry and then discuss where to find inspiration for poems. Thinking like poets, we create lists of ideas based upon observations and events that could be used for future poems. We also write in our first style of poetry- the fun anagram poem!
 Week 2
Lesson 2
Getting Started and Free Verse Poetry
This time we discuss the importance of focusing our ideas into one event or topic. We also practice using our five senses to describe our one chosen thing or event using a handout as a guide. This section also offers a discussion about participles, why they should be avoided, and how to avoid using them when writing poetry. We then use an idea from lesson one to demonstrate how to write your own free verse poem. Finally, you will be shown how to revise and edit your free verse rough draft.
 Week 3
Lesson 3
Rhymed Poetry and Rhyme Scheme
This time we take a closer look at rhymed poetry. To begin, we look at an example of rhymed poetry and find examples of literary devices used in the poem. Students are then encouraged to write their own rhymed poem after the process is demonstrated and with the use of a handout as a guide. Finally, a demonstration is provided in how to edit their poem by removing extra words from their writing.
 Week 4
Lesson 4
Humorous Poetry- Hyperbole
Who doesn't like poems with a sense of humor? This time we dive into humorous rhymed poems that use a big dollop of hyperbole to add to hilarity. First, we examine an example of a humorous poem and look for examples of the literary devices used in the text. Next, students are given a demonstration of how to craft their own poem and given the opportunity to do so. Finally, a demonstration is given on how to revise and edit their humorous poem.
 Week 5
Lesson 5
Poems with Formats: Tritina and Acrostic Poems
This time we explore the power of poetry with specific formats. A handout and demonstration will help guide you in the creation of your own tritina style poem. A handout will help you generate more creative acrostic style poems.
 Week 6
Lesson 6
Short Form Poetry
Never underestimate the power of shorter poems! This lesson series is a celebration of short form poetry. We explore and write: haiku, limerick, and concrete poems after seeing limerick and concrete poems demonstrated and with the help of handouts.
Students will learn to identify various literary devices and write unique poems in nine different poetry styles.
I have helped many students craft exciting and meaningful poems to share with friends and family over the years, both as a classroom educator and as a private tutor.
