Dr. Triya will serve as your session MC. At the beginning of each session, poets will sign-in if they would like to perform. (Poets who'd like to perform will be asked to share poems with Dr. Triya in advance to ensure appropriateness. ) Dr.Triya will read a poem from a "Poet of the Day". She will also model performance tools, poetic devices, poem analysis and other poetic inspirations that writers may use to make their performances come to life. Then the "Poetry Slam will last 35-40 minutes, depending on how many poets sign up for the day. If time provide, we will have a co-writing session, for poets who feel encouraged to write afterwards.

Lesson 2:
Say it Loud! Appreciating Your Own Life Story
Poets will explore the question-"Who are you and what is your identity?" and how inspiration for poems is all around them. Poet of the Day-Pablo Neruda-"Your Laughter". Poet Tip of the Day: Personification.Slam session at the end of class.

Lesson 3:
The Art of Expression
Poets will discuss how tone and intonation can be used to make their poems come to life during performances. Poet of the Day: Li Bai-Quiet Night Thought" .Poet Tip of the Day-Metaphor. Slam session at the end of class.

Lesson 4:
Freestyle
This session will be all about "freestyling". Dr. Triya will model the "Freestyle" game, where students give her any topic and she creates a poem from it. The group will do a whole class freestyle. We will watch the "Young Dylan Freestyle": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m7LSrEEnyNs&t=13s

Parental Guidance
Poetry is a powerful tool students can use to grapple with real world experiences. All poets will be encouraged to share thier poems prior to reading them to the group. We encourage the class to be a safe space for students to creatively express themselves while also being age-appropriate and safe.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Dr. Triya began writing poetry when she was 8 years-old. She has performed at House of Blues, a variety of university events with over 100 participants and other venues. She has taught grades K-12 in addition to teaching writing and literacy to college students for over 22 years.
