This interactive class is designed to allow learners to be introduced to Black music legends and to discuss the impact of Black artists on American music. It is also designed to encourage students who are passionate about music to sing, rap or play their favorite tunes! Each class session begins with a warm-up of "Name that Tune", where students can either play a song they want us to guess or the instructor will play one of her own. Afterwards, there will be a "Biography of the day" where students learn the history of an artist or group. They are also broken into groups to interview each other about which artists who inspire them, what it is about the art that inspires them and why. The last part of the session will be singing a song of the artist. Finally, if there is time we will have a speed round, where a student can share their own artist and song of the day (with previous approval by the instructor). All songs and biographies will be carefully vetted to ensure age appropriateness.
Learning Goals
Students will examine the impact of Black musicians on American music.
Students will have fun and increase confidence through in listening/speaking, performing and social skills through sing-alongs, karaoke, and group activities.
