Class Experience

Every week contains a short video clip (less than 5 minutes in length) recorded outdoors illustrating the week's concept, as well as a second short video recorded in my office. Every week includes a printable to facilitate a hands-on activity in which students create, experiment, and engineer concepts related to plastic pollution.
I am very responsive to all questions and love to have students share their designs and creations with me! This class offers a fun alternative to lecture-based classes. Students can expect to spend more time completing activities than watching videos.

Parents can expect their student to learn the following vocabulary:
Renewable vs. nonrenewable resources
Fossil Fuels (coal, oil, & natural gas)
Plastics & Microplastics
Hypothesis & experimental design

Most importantly, parents can expect motivated kids to participate in an experiment, design solutions for real-world problems, and use graphic organizers to compile their knowledge. Please don't hesitate to reach out with any questions. Plastic pollution is a big problem and this class is only an introduction.

Learning Goals

Parents can expect their student to learn the following vocabulary:
Renewable vs. nonrenewable resources
Fossil Fuels (coal, oil, & natural gas)
Plastics & Microplastics
Hypothesis & experimental design

Other Details

Learning Needs
With graphic organizers and hands-on activities, this class is perfect for kids with alternative learning needs including adhd, dyslexia, neurodivergent, and gifted.
Parental Guidance
Students could potentially become worried or upset about the impact that plastics have on our lives and the environment, though this class does not discuss long-term consequences of plastics in detail. Plastic pollution is a big problem and this class only provides an introduction.
Supply List
Students may choose to draw their designs or actually build models. Most families will find that common household recyclable materials (plastic bottles, scrap paper, etc.) are all that is needed. Having a printer would be very helpful as printable worksheets are provided weekly, although students could certainly utilize worksheets digitally if they choose.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

Virginia Teaching Certificate in Science
I am a licensed science teacher with experience teaching human impact ecology and life science. Before I became a teacher I worked with wildlife, in a microbiology lab, and also in animal welfare. I have always been called to work with children and have volunteered at girl scout camps, zoo camps and children's hospitals. As a teacher on Outschool I am committed to bringing visual and tangible content to the classroom. I believe teaching is more than just a lecture. My students learn best by seeing examples of concepts, and by breaking new content down into manageable pieces. I am always available for questions and support!
