Class Experience

US Grade Kindergarten - 3
Students learn important animal science vocabulary and concepts in a very hands-on way. Every week contains one video (approximately 10 minutes), one hands-on activity, and one worksheet to reinforce what they've learned. No slideshows, just real examples!
We will be looking at real animal skulls, identification tags used by US Fish & Wildlife Service, animal specimens, animal figurines, and making three dimensional tangible models of concepts.
In the first two lessons I demonstrate with clay/play dough. Students have the option to draw or paint instead. The second two lessons involve paper cutting. Students may draw instead or parents can assist with scissor skills/safety as needed. The last lesson requires dried white beans and sharpie, or scraps of white paper and pencil, to participate in a population count lab.
Weekly worksheets are black and white. Students may choose to color and doodle on them as they learn additional cool facts related to our lesson, reinforce concepts, and complete challenges. The printable worksheet provided for the last week of class is a short quiz with answers provided.

Learning Goals

Students will expand their zoology-related vocabulary and gain a broad understanding of animal science.

Other Details

Learning Needs
Due to the hands-on nature of this course, neurodivergent students or those with ADHD may find great success! No slideshows are used in my videos. My videos are not a lecture. They are full of examples and students can rewatch as needed.
Parental Guidance
Students will be invited to cut paper in the third and fourth lessons. For the third lesson, parents can easily prepare cut strips of paper for the child. For the fourth lesson, students are given the option to draw if needed. Scissor safety is the responsibility of a supervising parent.
Supply List
-Clay or play dough
-Colored/plain paper and scissors (optional, parent supervision as needed)
-Dried white beans & sharpie OR dozens of small squares of white paper and pencil
Having access to a printer is highly beneficial for handouts, however it is possible to enjoy the handouts digitally and use an annotate feature to complete.

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
Virginia Teaching Certificate in Science
My teaching experience in the life sciences includes zoology, ecology, and biology. Before I became a teacher I worked with wildlife, in a microbiology lab, and also in animal welfare. I have always been called to work with children and have volunteered at girl scout camps, zoo camps and children's hospitals. As a teacher on Outschool I am committed to bringing visual and tangible content to the classroom. I believe teaching is more than just a lecture. My students learn best by seeing examples of concepts, and by breaking new content down into manageable pieces. I am always available for questions and support!
