Class Experience
This is a one on one private tutoring class to help students succeed who are struggling with the foundational reading skills. Students will be assessed and based on their individual needs a plan will be developed to focus on those skills that they need the most help with. The focus of these sessions will deal with the Guided Reading Level they are assessed at. Depending on that level students will spend time working on building words/writing words and segmenting words. They will also work on learning to read the most common sight words in print and to learn to read them in isolation as well as in context. We will spend time on Leveled readers and will use different comprehension strategies to help strengthen those comprehension skills. Finally we will introduce phonemic awareness components based on needs which may include the following (rhyiming/segmenting syllables as well as individual sound in words. Once a plan has been developed we will work in 5 main areas (sight words/phonemic awareness/phonics/comprehension skills/fluency). My approach to tutoring is very hands on and engaging. I use a variety of materials such as videos/songs/whiteboards/flashcards/games and magnetic letters.

Hi my name is Mary Teegarden. My online students call me Miss Mary.
I am a mom of three amazing kids. When I am not teaching I love to read, sing and spend time with my family and friends.
This is my 27th year as a teacher. I have been a classroom teacher, a children's director, a reading intervention teacher for grades K-2 and most recently a private reading tutor and online teacher. I earned my Bachelor Of Elementary Education Degree from the University of Kentucky and my Master's Degree in Reading and Writing from Northern Kentucky University. I hold a teaching certificate in Grade K-5 in the state of Kentucky.
I am very passionate about teaching. I especially love anything to do with reading!! I love to see children learn and grow. Developing relationships with my students is so important to me and I enjoy getting to know each child in my class. I think that learning should be fun and plan lessons and activities for my classes that get students moving and thinking.
I will be teaching foundational reading skills in my classes for grades K-2. My classes will include phonemic awareness skills, letter recognition and sound, word building as well as sight word building skills.
