US Grade 1
Beginner Level
In this ongoing weekly class, students will review foundational reading skills that are taught in 1st Grade. You will see weekly topics listed in the Class Syllabus, BUT these classes will have a lot of review of skills, so your student can join in at any time! This class is perfect for students who: 🔵 Are ENTERING first grade and want to get a head start on their reading skills. 🔵 Students who have FINISHED first grade but would benefit from a little extra practice. I love to teach foundational reading concepts in fun and engaging ways such as word building activities, reading games and interactive grade level texts. For each class, I will review a combination of skills in each category, students will do an activity/practice the skills with the class, then the students will have an opportunity to do individual practice. After each class I will post additional resources and activities that students can work on throughout the week to practice the skills until we meet again. Providing positive reinforcement is very important to me while I am teaching my classes! I want students to feel successful and be able to practice their reading skills in a positive and fun environment! I will give your learner specific and positive feedback so that they can fix mistakes if needed and celebrate their successes! I hope to see your child in class soon! This week we will focus on the phonemic awareness skill of blending sounds to make words using an activity in Canva.
We will review reading and writing CVC Words.
We will review what a heart word is and look at several of them. (the/said/to/do/of)
We will review what a noun is and play a WORDWALL game to sort nouns into their categories.

Lesson 2:
Segmenting Sounds/Beginning "L" Blends/Heart Words/New Story to Explore!
This week we will focus on the phonemic awareness skill of segmenting individual sounds in words by playing one of the Google Drive Games.
We will introduce what a blend is and focus on beginning "L" blends.
We will look at picture clue cards and sounds in Canva.
We will write beginning "L" blends on our dry erase boards and read just right decodable reader "Playing Tag" together as a class.
We will look at some irregular spelled tricky heart words (from/are/was/what/your)

Lesson 3:
Blending Sounds/Beginning "R" Blends/Heart Words/Proper Nouns
This week will we focus on the phonemic awareness skill of blending sounds to create words.
We will introduce beginning "R" blends. We will look at our picture clue cards and sounds for each blend.
We will write some words with "R" blends on our dry erase boards.
We will play a WordWall game to read words with Beginning "R" Blends.
We will look at irregular spelled heart words (goes/says/their/were)
We will review what nouns are and what proper nouns are. We will look at examples of each.

Lesson 4:
Segmenting SoundBeginning "S" Blends/Heart Words/ New Story to Read and Explore!
This week we will focus on phonemic awareness skill of segmenting sounds to create words.
We will introduce beginning "s" blends. We will look at our picture clue cards and sounds for each blend.
We will write some words with "s" blends on our dry erase boards.
We will look at irregular spelled heart words (talk/walk/could/would)
We will read just right reader book "Snow Fun" as a class and discuss it.

I have been an elementary school teacher for 27 years. I taught in a regular classroom setting with 2nd and 3rd grade and for the last 12 years as a reading interventionist with grades K-5. My master's degree is in the area of reading and writing. I have done private tutoring for students with reading disorders for the last 12 years as well.
