Class Experience
*COMING IN JULY!* In this one-on-one class, learners will receive personalized instruction on playing the cello. They will also learn music theory concepts such as rhythm, clefs, time signature, and how to read notes. While the class is outlined below for a beginner, learners with previous cello experience are also welcome to join the class, and the curriculum will be modified to meet their needs. The class will run as follows: Week 1 4/22/24: We will learn about the parts of the cello/bow, accessories needed, how to care for the instrument, and positioning the cello including how to adjust the end pin to the correct height. Additionally, we will learn basic music reading skills (musical rhythm, clefs, time signature, and how to read notes). Please be sure that you have a metronome and tuner to use for practicing purposes. Week 2 4/29/24: We will continue reviewing concepts from week 1 and add the opportunity to learn how to pluck open strings with a good sound and with the metronome. We will play exercises from the book using the open D and A strings with the metronome set at a comfortable speed. Additionally, we will discuss the names of the other open strings. Week 3 5/6/24: After plucking open strings occurs with a good sound and with the metronome, we will learn left hand position so that we can play fingered first position notes. We will learn where to place the E, F sharp and G notes. The teacher make sure that learners show correct left hand position while playing the exercises. We will also make sure that the left hand fingers press hard enough against the string so that the notes do not have an “airy” sound. Week 4 5/13/24: We will continue working on concepts presented in week 3 and continue performing exercises in sequential order presented in the book. We will only continue to the next exercise after learners demonstrate complete understanding of the previous exercise, and the pace of the class can be modified based on the comfort and understanding of the learner. The teacher will also explain each of the orange boxes (which explain new concepts) presented in the book so that learners really understand what the book states. This includes the pencil bow hold, how to hold the bow, and how to perform with the bow.
Learning Goals
Students will learn basic cello technique such as parts of the instrument, bowing, and getting the best sound from the instrument.
Students will also learn music theory concepts such as rhythm, clefs, time signatures, and basic note reading, and apply these to their playing.
