Class Experience

In this class, younger students will have a chance to learn the basics of guitar. The class will cover parts of the guitar, correct position while playing, music theory concepts such as rhythm and note values, and treble clef note reading on the first 3 strings of the guitar.

With their knowledge of these notes, learners will be able to play 3 songs ("Spanish Theme," "Ode to Joy," and "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star"). Additionally, they will learn beginning forms of 2 commonly used guitar chords, C and G and learn how to strum along with a basic song.

Learning Goals

Students will learn how to play the notes on the first 3 strings of the guitar. They will learn modified and/or full forms of the chords C, G, and D. By the end of the course, students will have learned 3 songs, "Spanish Theme," "Ode to Joy," and "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star."

over 4 Weeks
Lesson 1:
Get to Know Your Guitar, Notes on the First String, "Spanish Theme"
Learn to identify the parts of the guitar. Introduce the first string (high E) and the notes on that string: E, F, and G. Students will learn to play their first song, "Spanish Theme" using these notes.
Lesson 2:
Notes on the Second String, "Ode to Joy"
Review the notes on the 1st string, learn the notes on the second string (B, C, and D) and combine these two strings to play the famous classical piece, "Ode to Joy."
Lesson 3:
Basic Chords G and C, "Rockin' Robin"
This week we take a break from the notes and learn some basic chords - beginner versions of chords C and G. Learn about strumming technique and apply these chords to the song "Rockin' Robin."
Lesson 4:
Notes on the Third String, "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star"
For our last week of class we will learn 2 more notes, low G and A on the third string, and combine all 3 strings to play the classic tune, "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star."
