1-2 hours per week. "Spot Checks" will be required. It is recommended that learners check in starting the hour they wake up, and at least once each hour throughout the day. This is a brain-based strategy that allows students to see physical documentation of how they are feeling at different points throughout the day, and any activators (triggers) that may play a role in the emotion or behavior.Assessment
Although this course does not consist of a form of formal assessment, I appreciate those that reach out for feedback on how this work has helped your children!Class Experience
Get ready to sound like a BRAINIAC! Within this course, learners will cover basic vocabulary of the brain (neuro), and the parts that are associated with a calm, regulated nervous system. A healthy nervous system = a healthy mindset! In return, learners will flourish when they gain the independence of their body and brain to apply themselves to whatever it is they want to put their mind too! In this course, learner's will engage in collaborative discussion and applied practice to understand the main part of your autonomic nervous system (ANS). The ANS is responsible for emotional regulation, and the bodies ability to regulate itself when the brain is under stress, or has undergone past traumas. This is a key component in a child's ability to take in and process new information. Students will dive deep in new information on the amygdala, prefrontal cortex, and hippocampus and how the three parts of the brain work together. This class will help pave the way for emotional exploration, and can be continued on with private coaching sessions with myself! - 10 minute "Brainiac Vocabulary" (Autonomic Nervous System, Amygdala, Prefrontal Cortex, Hippocampus) - 15 minute guided social-emotional literacy time using "Emotion Coach" by Diane Alber - 20 minute instruction of the use and implementation of PolyVagal Charts (Also referred to as Spot Checks in this course) - 10 minute debrief and goal setting This course includes an original resources, created by Whittne Ballinger, creator of this course. It is recommended this be assembled prior to the start of the first class. These booklets will be used to complete "Spot Checks." Spot Checks are a great strategy that teaches students to check-in with themselves and their autonomic nervous system throughout the day. These will be the focus Through time, learners are able to track individual patterns and triggers that may cause unwanted emotions, or behaviors. It is recommended that you print out and assemble the Spot Check journal prior to the beginning of the first class. This course will be the first resource that learner's can add to their brain-based toolkit. By the end of the course, learner's will have a strong understanding of how they can track their emotional state throughout the day, and work towards a more positive, growth mindset. *Spot check-in books can be found in course attachments, and should be assembled prior to the live session. This is an original pdf document, created by Whittne Ballinger and MillennialMomEDU.
Learning Goals
By the end of this course, students will implement cognitive strategies to track their emotional states.
Students will be able to identify the main parts of their autonomous nervous system, the system that controls fight or flight reactions.

Parental Guidance
Although this course is 100% child-friendly, I do encourage parents and adults to be close by. The information that we discuss as a group, will be beneficial for home life as well! It works better when both the learner and the adult are fully educated on the process! As for spot check entries, it is entirely up to the learner, or the family if they choose to make that a public conversation, or more of a private journaling time for the learner.
Supply List
Please have a hard copy of the "Spot Check" sheet handy. It is recommended to fill out one sheet per day, one month at a time. There is no mandatory assembly of the journal. I personally laminated the front and back cover, and had it bounded with a plastic spiral. A 3-ring binder also works great! Students enjoy the opportunity to design their covers each month!
