1 hour per week. There will be about 15 minutes of homework assigned after each session. In order to sharpen the students' multiplication skills, they should continue practicing the rhythmic exercises at home. I provide videos which students can refer to if the rhythmic activities become part of their homeschooling routine.Class Experience
US Grade 2 - 3
🌟 The goal of this interdisciplinary course is for students to experience the beauty and the fun behind numbers. Each session includes kinesthetic, visual, auditory and written activities. Participants will develop a new appreciation for math as they connect to numbers through music, geometry, movement and stories. 🤸♀️ We will start class by standing up to move to rhythmic poems, songs and coordination exercises. This will help the students feel invigorated and alert, and primed for the sit-down activities. Students will listen to stories which use geometry and imagery to bring life to the multiplication tables. They will practice the multiplication facts and will be given homework and resources to keep practicing at home. They will also listen to a story which will give them a sense as to why there are Square Numbers. 📅 Day 1: Rhythm of 6x; Square Numbers Day 2: Review; Hexagons and the 6x Song Day 3: The Story of the Powerful Rainbow and the 7x Trick Day 4: 7x Table; Game for Practicing Multiplication Facts 👓 NOTE: Students should be able to count on their own from 0 – 100. I recommend starting with “Movement Multiplies! Part 1” which covers the 2x, 3x, 4x, 5x and 10x tables. Students who can grasp larger numbers and have previous experience with the tables can join this class without taking Part 1. It can be followed by Part 3 (coming soon). ⏰ SCHEDULING: Please check all the meeting times before enrolling. Sometimes this course will be offered as a Camp (4 sessions in 1 week). 🌸 The philosophy of WONDERSTAND is rooted and inspired by Waldorf education; an education that nurtures each child’s talents and creativity. We strive to cultivate students’ intellectual, artistic, and practical skills in an integrated and personal way. Our courses help children develop the confidence they need to thrive in a rapidly changing world. Wonderstand was founded by Karin Pogharian, a passionate teacher with experience at three pioneer Waldorf schools.
🌍 MS. KARIN
I was born in Toronto, Canada into a Colombian-Armenian family. Multiculturalism is part of me. I speak English, Spanish, French and Armenian. I have lived in nine countries. For the last ten years, I have taught children in a variety of contexts, namely: a bilingual international school (Bogota, Colombia), a pioneer Waldorf school (Lake Atitlan, Guatemala), a homeschooling collective (Corsica, France) and online (with China). I graduated with an Honours BSc degree in Medical & Environmental Sciences from Queen's University, Canada. I have a Cambridge Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults and Young Learners (CELTA-YL). I am a certified Waldorf teacher for grades 1 to 8. In addition, I am a Tai Chi practitioner, a Pilates instructor and I love to dance. I like exploring different forms of artistic expression including watercolour painting, poetry, theater, photography, Blender 3D and Photoshop. I believe in the importance of encouraging children to develop their creativity through a variety of art mediums.
My goal with each course will be to awaken the students’ curiosity. Through interdisciplinary learning, I show students the connections between multiple subjects in order to widen their perspectives and allow them to develop a deeper understanding. The class material comes alive with storytelling which is sometimes based on personal experiences from faraway places, be it in India, Cambodia, Sri Lanka, East Timor, Bali, Peru or California.
