What's included

50 mins in-class hours per weekHomework
I will provide an additional arithmetic fact sheet for students to complete. This is a brief timed exercise (5 minutes) which will help students develop speed and fluency with their mental math. They are not racing with others to complete the exercises, but actually tracking their progress over time.Class Experience
US Grade 2
🌟 Welcome to a math adventure! Students will work with numbers in a variety of ways. Times tables will be reviewed with movement and skip counting. Arithmetic fact sheets will invite students to challenge themselves individually and track their weekly “personal best.” There will be fun games with dice or a deck of cards which will introduce the learner to developing strategy, and acquiring mental math speed and flexibility with numbers. 🔻 The class is generally reviewing topics which children have already been presented with and are not learning for the first time. The format of this ongoing math class will give students opportunities to improve mathematical fluency in a social setting. This is an *ONGOING* class. Students are welcome to join at any point. 🧙 There will be a storyline interwoven throughout the lessons to help foster children’s love for math! The story features the fictional characters, KING COUNTING and the four (operation) MATH GNOMES. If time permits, students will learn simple magic tricks using their deck of cards. ♣ CLASS STRUCTURE ♣ Rhymes & movement Dynamic multiplication table practice & skip counting Arithmetic fact speed sheet challenge Game (usually involving a deck of cards - *see Supply List*) 🤹♀️ MATERIALS – To fully participate, each student needs a deck of playing cards, a pair of small balls (or two pairs of rolled up socks), and the weekly printouts. Dice are optional. Ideally, each child will be able to lower the camera at times to share what is on their desk. 👓 MATH LEVEL – The class includes topics typically presented in a 2nd grade curriculum. Feel free to send me a message about your learner’s experience in math. Students should be able to solve introductory-level problems with the 4 operations, place value, measurement (length) and time. Exercises will include double digit subtraction (without borrowing), multiplying (up to 12 x 12) division (without remainders) and two-step word problems. Some students can have a printed 12 x 12 times table for easy reference as they continue to learn their tables. 🎲 NOTE ON COMPETITION: The arithmetic facts speed sheets provides a sense of competition with oneself and not necessarily with the other classmates. In classes where we use the board game, students are invited to advance together to achieve the end result. If there are "winners" in some games, it is more a reflection of luck than ability. 📅 SCHEDULE & TOPICS > Please note that all classes might include work with the 4 operations. Students who are not yet familiar with division can also participate. Week of September 27: Place Value & Comparing Numbers Week of October 4: Place Value, Strategy and Making Predictions Week of October 11: Estimation & Measurement Week of October 18: Fluency with Addition Week of October 25: Fluency with Subtraction Week of November 1: Quick Multiplication *~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
