🔢 Are you looking for a FUN way to memorize the times tables? This course will provide children with tools which they will WANT to use repeatedly to practice multiplication. Through hands-on activities and movement, they will integrate the process of memorizing the times tables in their heads, hearts and hands! 👓 This is a SELF-PACED class with NO live meetings. Your learner will be engaged through a variety of activities. You will receive *five* video lessons of approximately 30 minutes and accompanying printouts to work with during or after class. Advance at your own pace. 🌟 "Multiplication in Movement" brings math to life! 🤸♀️ The goal of this course is to help young students establish a deeper understanding of the times tables and the patterns found in them. Students will follow the story of Timmy ✖ TIMES and Paulie ➕ PLUS – the embodiments of multiplication and addition. Storytelling helps children comprehend fundamental math concepts while having fun. 🤹 Each class, students will stand up and move to the rhythm of skip counting. They will chant, clap and stomp the times tables, and use a small ball/hacky sack to coordinate their motor skills. By involving their whole body, children feel invigorated and awake. The course offers a multisensory learning experience to help students understand math from different perspectives. 🌈 Students will use their imagination to link the rhythmic quality of the times tables to the movement of animals. They will use crayons to create symmetrical art known in Waldorf schools as “form drawing.” Benefits of form drawing include improved spatial orientation, visual tracking, a sense of balance and enhanced attention to detail. Short stories of animals and characters will accompany each drawing. We will use number circles (printouts are provided) to link geometry to the patterns found in multiplication tables. Students will be surprised to see the beauty behind numbers. ============================ 📅 COURSE CONTENT 📅 Lesson 1: Introducing the concept; skip counting 2x, 5x, 11x tables, Setting the scene and meeting Timmy ✖ Times (multiplication character) Making our 3D Magic Circle Discovering geometry in the 2x table Lesson 2: Furthering the concept of multiplication; skip counting 3x table Discovering geometry in the 3x table Playing hopscotch with multiples of 3 Lesson 3: Skip counting 4x table; Discovering geometry in the 4x table Meeting Paulie ➕ Plus (addition character) Flower craft with multiples of 4 Lesson 4: Reviewing skip counting coordination movements Form drawing (2x, 3x, 4x) animal stories linking rhythm to number patterns Lesson 5: Introducing the concept of Common Multiples Story and board game to practice common multiples ============================ 🖐 To join this class, students should be able to recognize numbers and count on their own from 0 – 100. They will need to have the printouts ready for class (provided) and would benefit from using materials (see supply list) for the hands-on activities and crafts. Children who have taken "The Story of the Four Operations" will benefit from this course. ✳️SUGGESTED SEQUENCE FOR MATH FLEX CLASSES WITH MS. Parental Guidance
The movement activities will improve the children’s ability to coordinate the left and right sides of their body and improve their spatial awareness. The movements will be done at a gradual and comfortable pace. They will include: tossing a bean bag from one hand to another, under the legs, in a straight line from one hand to the hand below, balancing it on their heads, timing a toss with a clap, stomping and clapping at different intervals. Simultaneously, we recite the times tables (forwards and backwards) to allow the children to focus and be present in their body while working with math and speech. During these 3-5 minute movement activities, parents could accompany and supervise their children. Children should have space away from walls and furniture pieces, and footwear which provides good support.
Children will need scissors to cut the paper plate and yarn while making their multiplication circles. Parents are asked to provide appropriate supervision when necessary.
