Class Experience

This weekly class teaches students to take good care of their minds and bodies using kid-friendly mindfulness activities. Each class follows a similar structure with a slightly different theme each week. The sitting meditation is called 'Pebble Meditation' and introduces kids to the basics of sitting meditation like how to sit, using the breath, and practicing concentration. Practicing mindfulness from a young age foundational skills for academics and life!

Typical class activities include:
- yoga warm up
-pebble meditation (a sitting meditation using 4 pebbles and images from nature)
-mini-lesson and conversation about mindfulness

"Practice not perfection!"
Mindfulness is a skill we will build together with practice over time. I also encourage kids to practice what we learn outside of class in their daily life. Ask them what they are learning and consider practicing with them.

Quiet AND social time each class
During class, we spend some time in silent meditation and some time discussing mindfulness and doing interactive activities. My main goal for this class is to provide age-appropriate, fun, mindfulness practice so students have a positive experience with mindfulness from an early age.

Other Details

Parental Guidance
We do some movement practices most classes including yoga or Qigong. Poses may include sitting, standing, lying down and balancing poses. The purpose is to encourage mind-body connection and awareness as well as to strength and move the body for health and wellbeing. Poses are at a beginner level and low-moderate intensity. If your learner needs movements to be adapted, please let me know. Learners should have a clear, safe space and mat or carpet for the movement part of class. Mindfulness has many benefits including managing everyday stresses with more balance and equanimity. If your learner experiences more intense or chronic anxiety and mental or emotional health issues, please also consult your physician and/or therapist for support and advice.

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
I have a special interest in mindfulness and sharing it with others. I am sensitive to mental health and wellness issues with a Post-Baccalaureate Diploma from the University of Manitoba including counseling and Universal Design courses. I have practiced mindfulness personally for over 20 years and with my kids for the past two years and am currently working though a Mindfulness Based Fitness Training (MMFT) course with Elizabeth Stanley. I am also influenced and inspired by Thich Nhat Hanh, Sharon Salzberg, and Jon Kabat-Zinn, among others. I work mindfulness and meditation into my daily life and have also participated in several meditation retreats ranging from one day to 10 days!
