Description

Class Experience

This class is taught in English.
This course addresses the middle school Weather and Climate section of the Next Generation Science Standards
I have been teaching science for two years and have over ten years of experience in informal science education work at children's museums, science centers, planetariums, and natural history museums. I have completed three college courses on science education as well as college-level courses on conservation education. I have worked at and led educational camps and workshops on climate and weather. I am a Project! Wild certified conservation educator.
Students will be provided digital materials (complete with additional videos and books to consult if needed) for two self-led learning days each week. These are organized by subjects into packets which should take an hour or less.
Notebook and Pencil
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
We will use daily quiz games to monitor concept comprehension. Learners will receive brief progress reports each week. Additionally, projects will be used to informally assess student comprehension and mastery.
1 hour 30 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 2 - 4 hours per week outside of class.
We will be discussing natural disasters including references to events and consequences of climate change and extreme weather. Discussions will be age-appropriate and include no visual images or descriptions of injuries. However, due to the topic nature death or injuries may be implied or mentioned by student questions or responses.
We will be using Nearpod. This online platform requires students to click a link in chat and enter a username in order to view materials and complete interactive activities. Students are encouraged to use first initials or names only. Please remind your student not to use their full name online for safety reasons.
Sources will include articles from National Geographic, BBC, Scientific Journals, and Encyclopedias adapted to grade-level. We will also be using some resources adapted from Open Educational Resources "Middle School Earth Science Textbooks including Thunderbolt Kids Fifth and Sixth Grade, "Introduction to Earth Science", , CK12.org, and Stanford Edu's "Learning through Application" textbook.
