In this one time, winter themed class, learners will practice strategies to solve multi-step word problems. Students will have the opportunity to practice solving multi-step multiplication word problems. During this class we will practice strategies that take students beyond simply looking for key words. Learners will have the opportunity to interact with lesson slides, solve problems collaboratively with other learners, work independently, and play games. Learners will work with high level thinking math problems that require them to add, subtract, and multiply to find the answer.
Learning Goals
In this course, students will learn how to:
-Solve multistep word problems posed with whole numbers and having whole-number answers using the four operations, including problems in which remainders must be interpreted. Represent these problems using equations with a letter standing for the unknown quantity. Assess the reasonableness of answers using mental computation and estimation strategies including rounding.
-Use the four operations to solve word problems involving distances, intervals of time, liquid volumes, masses of objects, and money, including problems involving simple fractions or decimals, and problems that require expressing measurements given in a larger unit in terms of a smaller unit.
