👋Welcome to Main idea bootcamp! There is one main idea here... and that's finding the Main idea! This camp is specifically made and tailored for 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students and focuses on helping those who are struggling with their reading comprehension! This is done by helping students to enjoy reading and of course learning one of the most important and sometimes most difficult parts of reading. Finding the Main Idea... Which involves... Comprehending the text, Sifting through "random" details, identifying key details, connecting them all together and condensing it into as few words as possible. 🤔I have taught thousands of reading classes, and if there is one thing that has stuck out so far, it is that MANY students are struggling with finding the Main Idea. Often times when asked to find the Main idea, students will simply read the title and say "Beavers!"... However, they are forgetting that the last 3 paragraphs were talking about how "Beavers are helpful to the environment!" <--- Hence the Main Idea. Many students may try to simply read the Title or summarize the story in their own words because they may be struggling to discern the difference between the Title, Summary and Main Idea. 💡Which is where this class comes in!💡 Class Structure: Each day for the fist 2-5 minutes students will be able to receive explicit instructions on what a main idea is and how to identify it within a text. We may do this by incorporating an engaging 2 minute video that was made by the instructor, along with understandable and clear instructions that can help the students understand how to find the main idea by using recurring information, and key details throughout the text. The students will then be able to read a short story that is broken into paragraphs. The students will work on reading the paragraphs and determining the main idea of each section! Students are encouraged to work together, share ideas, underline the key details, write notes and ask questions! ☑️I really enjoy making the lessons engaging, interactive and enjoyable for the students, so after each section the students will be able to answer some comprehensive questions that are based around the main idea/supporting details. I find that this part of the class can be very engaging as students enjoy sharing and hearing the different ideas and reasonings while also eagerly waiting to see when the correct answer is finally shared! Below are listed the short stories that we will be covering each day! 📅Week 1: Day 1- Cane Toads: A Poisonous Wart Day 2- Wintertime: It's gonna get colder Day 3- Are You Wearing Your Seatbelt? 📅Week 2: Day 1- "Fresh" Food Day 2- Trap Plants: The Meat Eating Plant Day 3- The Pony Express Please reach out if you have any questions!

Teacher expertise and credentials
Bachelor's Degree from University of North Florida
Hello everyone!
I am very thankful to be teaching here on outschool. I have been working with children now for nearly 7 years and have been able to teach over 3000 online classes. I have a wide variety of experience from working with charter schools, local government recreation positions, public school programs and multiple online teaching platforms. Over the years I’ve had multiple educator roles such as Online Teaching, Homeschooling, Reading Tutor, Soccer Coach, Bible teacher, Sunday School, Fitness Educator, Camp Counselor and an ESL Teacher. During that time I have been able to teach a variety of different topics including English, Reading, Math, Finance, Fitness, Health, Technology and more.
I received my Bachelors degree from the University of North Florida while studying Health Science/Fitness. I was also in charge of putting together a health awareness program for struggling students while working with a charter school.
Afterwards I began working with multiple different curriculums and have specialized in working with struggling readers and began creating custom reading evaluations and courses that are tailored to help students improve in all areas of reading including speed, accuracy, pronunciation and comprehension.
You may also see that I offer typing courses which were designed to help students learn the foundational skills of typing on a computer by building and utilizing proper finger positioning, muscle memory and visual/kinesthetic accuracy while also incorporating challenging and engaging typing games/lessons.
I really do enjoy teaching many different topics and learning more everyday as I believe there is an infinite amount of wisdom to learn so we should never stop learning.
My goal as a teacher is to Equip, Encourage and Challenge each of my students to not just learn the information but rather to learn it and use it wisely in their lives.
If you have any questions please send me a message :)
