Children will learn to write a "moment in time" passage using a nature photo as a prompt. We will open with introductions and get to know each other in the space. Then we will look at a photo and brainstorm what might be happening and some words and phrases we might use to describe the scene. We will discuss the criteria for a "moment in time" writing, which is different than a narrative or a report. Next we will spend some time writing independently. Learners will have the option to illustrate their writing. We will share and celebrate our work. Learners will receive both compliments and constructive suggestions to improve their writing. Finally, we will end with a guided meditation in which students will get to transport themselves to their own "special place" and regulate their emotions and stress levels. My teaching style is warm, relaxed, and organised. We establish basic expectations at the beginning of the class: 1) One person speaks at a time (on mute if we are not speaking). 2) We ask questions and make mistakes in order to grow our brains. 3) We are here to have fun! All learners will interact with me and with each other and co-construct their learning. I noticed recently there are a lot of searches on Outschool for “mindfullness.” (Note spelling.) I am adding this word into my description to make sure the class appears for “mindfullness” as well as “mindfulness.”
Learning Goals
Students will learn to describe a scene, identify parts of speech, use the most specific and appropriate words in their writing, and regulate their emotions through mindfulness practice.
