2-4 hours per week. Practice your magic routine at least 30 minutes each day until you can do it well. Then rehearse it as if you're in front of an audience, and record it on video for your review. Only when you feel completely confident with the routine (knowing exactly what to do and say without fumbling), perform it in front of an audience.Class Experience
Magic is a performing art. Its true secrets lie not in the tricks themselves but in the personalities of the people performing them: how they establish rapport with their audiences while deftly directing their attention both physically and psychologically for the purpose of honest, entertaining deception. Students in this class will learn that lesson well. After introductions, they’ll watch a 25-minute presentation that is, essentially, a crash course in magic covering a bit of my background and the fundamentals of magic, including its theories, science, categories, classifications, and nomenclature. There will be demonstrations throughout the presentation and a Q&A session afterward. Participants will then learn the basics of playing cards and practice holding, shuffling, cutting, dealing, and spreading a deck in preparation for learning a mental-themed card trick. Although there are hundreds of thousands of good card tricks out there, I handpicked this one as the first lesson because it incorporates some of the key fundamental principles discussed earlier in the presentation with an emphasis on performance and psychology. Any students who are interested in running through a practice performance in front of their classmates can do so at this point. Afterward, I’ll wrap up the class discussing the possibility of future Outschool classes and encouraging students to watch my follow-up video tutorials and to practice what they learned as often as possible outside of class.
Learning Goals
Students who do well in my classes pay close attention during the sessions and make time to practice as frequently as possible outside of class. Repeated practice and rehearsal, even for the easiest tricks, develops muscle memory and thus frees the mind to focus on the performance. As I’ve told many students over the years, you get out of magic what you put into it. That might sound cliché, but it’s accurate.
Other Details
Supply List
Please have your learner bring a deck of cards, preferably Bicycle brand or other high-quality deck. Also, I strongly recommend buying a close-up pad, a rubber-backed, felt-topped performing surface made specifically for magicians. You can buy one directly from me or from any online magic dealer. As an alternative, please have your student use at least a tablecloth-covered table and have a notepad and pen handy to write down thoughts, questions, and ideas.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Sources
After class, you can download a lesson summary with links to instructions, a video tutorial, and other material we covered in class.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I’m a professional magician, magic teacher, writer, and content creator in San Diego, California, and consider teaching the art and science of magic one of my all-time favorite activities.
As a member of the International Brotherhood of Magicians (IBM), Society of American Magicians (SAM), and Academy of Magical Arts (AMA), I’ve taught magic to children and adults for more than 35 years and performed thousands of close-up and stand-up magic shows in Pennsylvania, Virginia, and California.
With a B.A. in professional writing and minors in communications and management, I’ve published instructional articles in international magic journals and worked on the East Coast in the marketing-communications departments of two companies for about 12 years before moving to San Diego and starting my magic business, recently focusing more on teaching and creating content than on performing.
My teaching philosophy is simple: Magic is about the performer and his or her rapport with the audience, not about the tricks themselves. It takes some magic enthusiasts years to understand that one simple truth, but I strive to help my students learn and remember it from the very beginning.
To learn more about me, my background, and my views on teaching magic, please read my full Outschool profile or watch my introductory video. In the mean time, I can’t wait to meet and teach the child in your life.
