Fallacies are common errors in reasoning that undermine our thinking, writing, speaking and above all, the logic of our arguments. This short two week course is to meant to continue our discussions on some of the other common logical fallacies that abound around us. Meant to serve as a continuation of the first Logically Speaking course, this session will not cover the history of the famous Logician, Aristotle, but will suppose the participants' knowledge of him. This course will dive deeper into other logical fallacies not covered in the first session. Using slides, images and text to understand and discuss definitions of fallacies, the instructor will lead students through a Socratic Style Seminar of understanding definitions before opening up with exercises to check retention. This class will cover common fallacies such as: Class 1: Straw Man, Ad Populum, Ambiguity, Tu Quoque, Burden of Proof and Genetic Fallacy Class 2: Post Hoc, Ergo Propter Hoc, Logical Paradox, Ad ignorantiam, Appeal to Authority, Ad hoc reasoning, Appeal to tradition. Students must be proficient readers to participate. No other prior knowledge is needed. Discussion encouraged from all participants.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello! I'm Shaheen and I look forward to meeting you all virtually. I've been teaching language arts and the humanities for over 25 years in public, private and charter schools to elementary, middle and high school students. I also homeschool my own four children, and I am an education consultant for other homeschooling families. My expertise is in teaching the humanities and literature classes for middle and high school aged kids. I offer classes in the Socratic Seminar style for kids as young as 4th graders. Holding an M.S. in Education and a certification in teaching ESL, I am happy to bring the love of learning to your kids.
My goals, with teaching students, are to make them life long learners and passionate about education. I enjoy teaching poetry, literature, logic and the classics and I hope to pass this love of language on to my students!
