Description

Class Experience

The poetic genius of the people of Southeast Asia highlights the imaginative, creative and transformative power of words in a region relatively new to the English language. Yet, poetry transcends cultural and linguistic barriers and creates cross-cultural understanding and appreciation of all things beautiful.

Join us, as we discuss the poems of Tagore and Naidu in a non-argumentative, socratic seminar style discussion. 

Class will begin with a look at the regional geography, terms in use,...

This class is taught in English.

Students will improve their understanding of a new geographical region’s intellectual growth and influence.
Students will use various poetic terms to describe and develop ideas to discuss the poems they read and draw out meanings. 
Students will determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including figurative and connotative meanings; analyze the impact of specific word choices on meaning and tone, including analogies or allusions to other texts.

As a teacher from South East Asia, I bring a  personal connection to the subject and themes discussed in these poems. As a teacher of literature and the humanities, I bring the knowledge of assessing and parsing them. With this dual connection to the poets and poems chosen for this class, I bring, engagement, excitement and relevance to each session.

Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

Informal in class recall and discussions

1 hour per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
