What is Philosophy for Kids? In this trial/introductory class, come explore what philosophy is all about and what it means to be a young philosopher in the world! Afterwards, consider joining our Philosophical Social Club for more fun and informal chatting!

Many people do not learn what philosophy as a discipline is until they end up taking a college course as an adult. That was my own first "introduction" to philosophy! I absolutely loved learning about the discipline but I found so many stereotypes still existed about what philosophy even was. Was it a particular type of belief? Was it only for ancient people? Was it only for certain types of people or maybe not even relevant until you were old? I found so many misunderstandings of the discipline that I loved so much that I desired to teach introductory college courses myself! I wanted to show people that it was all about tapping into our natural traits of curiosity, wonder, creativity, and critical thinking -- and those were skills we all have access to!

Come explore how philosophical thinking is available to ALL of us, no matter our age and is not only a relevant discipline today, but will always hold invaluable tools that benefit humanity. We are born with philosophical abilities, the key is not to lose them, and keeping them strong into adulthood will serve us well!

The main topics that will be explored are: curiosity, wonder, creativity, and critical thinking.

Learning Goals

Students will be introduced to what philosophy for kids is all about! The discussion-based expectations are very low-key and relaxed.

Other Details

Parental Guidance
This class will allow for the free exchange of ideas from the learners. Therefore, parents can decide if the open-discussion nature of the class is a good fit for their young learner(s). Of course, all discussions will always be moderated in a way to keep examples and views relevant, appropriate, and in line with Outschool's policies.
Pre-Requisites
None
Supply List
Some students find it fun to create art while chatting, so a notebook or paper might be good to have close by to draw, doodle or even make something with clay. This is just an optional idea and certainly not required but can increase focus and creativity in some learners. Some students may want to take optional notes as well, depending on their academic goals.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
