Class Experience

US Grade 6 - 9
Writing your thoughts down in a concise and comprehensive manner is a key literary skill to acquire.
In this class, students learn to differentiate between a summary and an analysis of various literary pieces. Each week students will learn to summarize and then analyze a different form of literature.

Week 1: Summary/Analysis of Fictional Short Story. Homework assigned.
Week 2: Summary/Analysis of Famous Speech. Homework assigned.
Week 3: Summary/Analysis of Non-Fiction Piece- in class discussion.

Each class will be led via a slideshow, reading and discussion and then followed by a student written piece assessed by the teacher (not for grade, but for improvement). Students should read at middle school level and be able to write a short cohesive essay to get the most out of this class.

Teacher will take each student at the level they are at and encourage them to think deeper and write better. Feedback may include grammar, writing, structure or analysis components.

If students are already writing at grade level and are familiar with the 5 paragraph essay, they will be encouraged to write a 5 paragraph essay. Otherwise students will write 3 paragraphs to show their understanding of the differences between a summary and an analysis.
Learning Goals
Students will learn the differences between a Summary and an Analysis. They will learn to write short but cohesive paragraphs of each.
