This course will explore 4 of the most significant East Asian philosophies. Each week we will read primary texts from the founders of each philosophy and explore the main ideas and positions of each. We will discuss questions of what is human nature, what type of government is best, and how should we live through the lens of each philosophy. Students will develop their skills in textual analysis and oral discussion while exploring the ideas of these important thinkers. Students will be guided through the historical context for each philosophy under discussion, as well as presented with visual support to help them study each philosophy in depth during our discussion. Optional writing assignments will be provided after class for students desiring individualized feedback. Week 1-Taoism Week 2-Buddhism Week 3-Confucianism Week 4-Legalism
