Class Experience

US Grade Pre-Kindergarten - Kindergarten
Join me for this fun literacy and math class with a certified teacher! I love teaching and it is important to me to create an environment where children are excited to come to class, participate, and have fun while learning! I taught Kindergarten, First Grade, Third Grade, and a Transition to Kindergarten class for over 17 years and am excited to teach your learner on Outschool! This class is for students who are in Kindergarten or preparing for kindergarten and is based on the Pre-K and Kindergarten literacy and math standards. We will meet throughout the year so we will develop friendships with the other learners. I love to teach and love for learners to participate throughout the class. We will learn by playing games, writing, drawing pictures, and moving throughout the class. I am very energetic and love to sing, play learning games, and make learning fun!

This ongoing class will continue throughout the school year and each week will have a different theme. We will have fun, interactive literacy, writing, phonics, reading, language arts, and math activities that will give your learner a strong educational foundation.

I love to greet each child as they enter the classroom and connect with them by asking a fun question. We begin by playing a warm-up game and then try to figure out what is in the Mystery Box. The Mystery Box holds a special item related to our weekly theme. We read clues together and then guess what could be in the box! It is so exciting! I love stuffed animals, so there is usually an animal that joins us. Throughout each class, our language arts and math activities will go along with our theme and what is in the Mystery Box.

Each day, we have a Morning Message that we will read together. It will contain language arts and math games and activities, as well as a question of the day. I love for all children to have a chance to guess, share and be heard so I encourage all children to raise their hands and wait to be called on. This way we can have a fun, structured class where everyone can participate by taking turns. We will also learn about the calendar and discover our Mystery Letter and Mystery Number of the day.

To learn about the letters and their sounds we will have Mystery Letters of the week! We will practice writing the uppercase and lowercase letters using correct letter formation. We will play letter and sound games to learn and reinforce the letter sounds. Even though we will focus on the Mystery Letters of the week, we will also review the other letters and their sounds. Each week we will explore making words using the letters of the week.

We will learn to build and read CVC, CCVC, and CVCC words using our blending arm and stretching words to hear the sounds in them. We will also have fun finding rhyming word pairs and finding syllables for words.

Each week we will learn to read and write new sight words as well as play sight word games to reinforce our recognition of the sight words.

Throughout this class, we will also learn about the writing process. We will start by learning about labeling pictures with words and eventually learn how to build and write a sentence.

Some literacy skills we will learn about are:
Identifying the letters and sounds
Writing the letters - uppercase and lowercase

At the end of each class we will have a scavenger hunt where everyone will find something to share with us that fits a theme!
I love this scavenger hunt because it helps teach children social skills such as taking turns and listening when our friends are talking. It is important to me for all children to be heard and feel important. If someone doesn't want to share then that is ok!

Each class we will also sing a fun thematic movement game or song that will get give our brains a break and get our bodies moving!

These are the themes we will have throughout the year.
September- Friendship, Favorites, Apple exploration, Community Helpers
October - Bats, Spiders, Owls, Pumpkins
November - Turkeys, Silly Vegetables, Fall Fun
December - Gingerbread, Reindeer and Caribou, Cold Weather Fun

A dry erase board or paper and something to write with is needed for each class.

I love stuffed animals and will have stuffed animals help us throughout our class. Your child is welcome to bring a stuffed animal or special toy to class.

During this class, we learn social skills such as taking turns, waiting our turn, when to listen and when to talk, how to ask questions, and how to interact in a classroom setting. Hi! I love to teach preschool and early elementary classes and strive for ways to make learning fun and exciting! It is my goal to celebrate all learners and help them to love learning. Teaching phonics, reading, writing and math skills are my absolute favorite!

I graduated from Hiram College in Ohio with a BA in Elementary Education and a Reading Endorsement which means that I did extra course work so I could become a reading specialist if I chose. After college, I taught kindergarten, 1st and 3rd grade for a total of 8 years. During that time, I was honored to be selected as Teacher of the Year for my elementary school and finalist for county wide Teacher of the Year in Nashville, TN. In addition to teaching, I was also a curriculum developer and workshop presenter for 5 years. I created reading, writing, and math curriculum for the county, and then trained elementary teachers K-5 how to teach that curriculum in their classrooms. I also worked for a publishing company developing reading and math units. I stayed home with my children when they were young and then taught a transition to kindergarten class for 6 years.

I love teaching children and believe that learning should be fun and engaging! Children learn best when they are laughing, smiling, singing, drawing, doing hands-on activities, moving, and having fun! For me, there is no greater joy than helping a child grow and learn! I love to play games, sing and make learning fun!

One fun fact about me is that I love animals and have many stuffed animals. My stuffed animals love to join me in my classes. If your learner has a special stuffed animal we would love to have it join us too!
