Join me for this fun, interactive way to prepare your child for First Grade with a certified teacher! I love teaching and it is important to me to create an environment where children are excited to come to class, participate, and have fun while learning! I taught Third Grade, First Grade, Kindergarten and a Transition to Kindergarten class for over 16 years and am excited to teach your learners on Outschool! Use the coupon code MOTLESUMMER6 for a $6 discount This ongoing class will continue throughout the summer and each week will have a different theme! We will have fun, interactive literacy and math games that go along with our weekly theme! These literacy, phonics, reading and math activities will help reinforce the skills learned in Kindergarten and will prepare your child for First grade! To start each class, I love to greet each child as they enter the classroom and connect with them by asking a fun question! We begin by playing a warm up game and then trying to figure out what is in the Mystery Box! The Mystery Box holds a special item related to our weekly theme. We read clues together and then guess what could be in the box! As we read the clues, we practice reading sight words, identifying parts of words, and building upon our reading and fluency skills. It is so exciting to find out what is in the box each day! Throughout each class, we have literacy activities and games that go along with our theme. Each day we will explore the different literacy skills spelling rules such as letters and sounds, vowel teams, diphthongs, digraphs, word families and blends. We will play letter and sound games to reinforce the letter sound knowledge. We will also practice our writing skills each day by writing letters and words and drawing small pictures to accompany the words. We will learn how to write and edit a sentence together using correct capitalization, spaces, punctuation marks and learn different spelling and phonics rules. We review, learn to read and write sight words. We also play sight word games and go on sight word scavenger hunts trying to find hidden sight words. These fun games help reinforce sight word knowledge. Each day, we have a special Morning Message that we will read together practicing reading skills and fluency. Through this we will learn to read sight words and decode words. The morning message has literacy and math skills in it as well as a question of the day. We will learn about math through our Mystery Numbers of the week! Throughout this class we will learn to identify and write larger numbers, learn about place value, tally marks, the tens frame, graphing, addition and subtraction. We will also count to 100 by 5's and 10's, learn about skip counting, comparing numbers using greater than and less than, graphing, and patterning. Near the end of each class, we will go on a scavenger hunt to find something related to our learning! Some math skills we will learn about and explore are: addition subtraction using a tens frame number sense writing numbers and equations patterning graphing place value counting by 2's, 5's, and 10's reading and solving word problems. Literacy and phonics skills that we will learn about and explore are: Identifying and writing uppercase and lowercase letters Letter sounds Vowels Making and writing words CVC and CCVC words Identifying beginning, middle and ending sounds in words Blending letter sounds together Consonant blends Digraphs Vowel teams Word Families Syllables Rhyming Reading and writing sight words How to identify unknown words when reading Reading comprehension Writing a sentence Editing a sentence Each week is thematic! Below are the monthly themes. If there is an animal or theme that is your learner's favorite please let me know and we can incorporate that! June - zoo animals, pets and animals July - jungle, dinosaurs August - Insects and bugs, ocean and beach Daily focus- Tuesday - Literacy skills - editing a sentence, making words, phonics, and reading Wednesday - Reading and Math skills- addition, subtraction, place value, number sense, rhyming Thursday - Literacy skills - word families, reading, and writing a sentence I love for every child to participate throughout our class, if they would like. By doing this, we learn social skills such as taking turns, waiting our turn, when to listen and when to talk, how to ask questions, and how to interact in a classroom setting. Each child will need something to write on such as paper or dry erase board. We will use this to practice solving addition and subtraction math equations, write sight words, word families, write words, draw pictures and write sentences to describe our pictures. We will learn about the importance of using who, what, where, when and why when we write and read and how to incorporate them into our writings. I hope you can join me for this fun and engaging class to prepare your child for first grade! Please let me know if you have any questions!

Hi! I love to teach preschool and early elementary classes and strive for ways to make learning fun and exciting! It is my goal to celebrate all learners and help them to love learning. Teaching phonics, reading, writing and math skills are my absolute favorite!
I graduated from Hiram College in Ohio with a BA in Elementary Education and a Reading Endorsement which means that I did extra course work so I could become a reading specialist if I chose. After college, I taught kindergarten, 1st and 3rd grade for a total of 8 years. During that time, I was honored to be selected as Teacher of the Year for my elementary school and finalist for county wide Teacher of the Year in Nashville, TN. In addition to teaching, I was also a curriculum developer and workshop presenter for 5 years. I created reading, writing, and math curriculum for the county, and then trained elementary teachers K-5 how to teach that curriculum in their classrooms. I also worked for a publishing company developing reading and math units. I stayed home with my children when they were young and then taught a transition to kindergarten class for 6 years.
I love teaching children and believe that learning should be fun and engaging! Children learn best when they are laughing, smiling, singing, drawing, doing hands-on activities, moving, and having fun! For me, there is no greater joy than helping a child grow and learn! I love to play games, sing and make learning fun!
One fun fact about me is that I love animals and have many stuffed animals. My stuffed animals love to join me in my classes. If your learner has a special stuffed animal we would love to have it join us too!
