Class Experience

US Grade Kindergarten - 1

In this class, we will practice words with the short /i/ sound in the medial position like [bib], [dig], [fin], [kit], [lip], [pig], [six], [wig], [win], and [zip]. There will be a quick review of the /i/ sound at the beginning of class. Then, learners will be shown a picture and we will orally say each sound in the word. Next, learners will be encouraged to say each sound while I show each letter on the screen. Last, students will say the sound of each letter in the word and write it on their own, either on paper (preferred so they can go back and re-read their work!) or a whiteboard as I demonstrate the correct formation of each letter on the screen. 

Learners will be involved in every step of the reading and spelling process through answering questions out loud and writing on their own the letters and sounds in each word. They will also be encouraged to draw the picture that goes along with each word to reinforce future re-readings and memory!

Learning Goals

Learners will increase their knowledge of letter sounds, both orally and in print, and practice putting the sounds together to make words. Learners will also improve their fine motor skills through writing the letters in each word and drawing the accompanying picture.

Supply List

Learners are requested to have several sheets, or half sheets, of paper and a writing instrument of their choice like pencil or marker.

External Resources

Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

I have a variety of classes to offer including kindergarten and first grade reading/ phonics skills, story read alouds and discussions, and how to care for guinea pigs! 

I have taught almost all ages of children for many years, from infant through sixth grade, as well as been an early intervention (birth to three) parent educator and online ESL teacher. I homeschooled my twin boys for the year before they entered kindergarten and it was a most wonderful time in my life that I would love to share with other families and children! 

I have been married to my high school sweetheart for twenty years. We have a musically and artistically talented seventeen year old daughter and smart and funny identical twin twelve year old boys. 

I am so very happy to be a part of the Outschool world and look forward to seeing your awesome learners in my classroom!
