Let's Conquer Fraction Operations!
What's included
4 live meetings
3 hrs 40 mins in-class hoursHomework
1 hour per week. Students will be provided a set of practice problems (15-20) per week. Students are to complete the problems and submit them back to the teacher for grading by Sunday evening to allow return time and feedback (submission is optional for homeschool records). Practice is strongly encouraged to gain the most from the conceptsAssessment
At the end of the class, a link will be provided for assessment to determine mastery. Families will be provided the final score via a report with the answers selected for review (upon request). This will support academic evidence for home school or school requirements for transcripts (please consult your school prior if other evidence is needed to support academic learning).Class Experience
US Grade 3 - 6
In this fraction course, students will learn how to add, subtract, multiply, and divide fractions over the course of 4 sessions. During this time, they will work on the following skills per week (with supplemental practice provided): Session 1- Reviewing simplifying fractions (using greatest common factor), and learn how to add fractions with like and unlike denominators (using least common multiple) Session 2- Review finding common denominators and learn to subtract fractions Session 3- Fraction Multiplication and working with improper and mixed numbers Session 4- Dividing fractions and working with mixed numbers in addition During each class, I will introduce the topic, and we will practice problems. Students will be given the opportunity to practice the problems on the screen as well through annotating, interacting with one another, and ask any questions. Questions will be presenting on the screen after the introduction of each section, and students will practice them independently, providing responses in the chat feature of Outschool. If students demonstrate an understanding, practice rounds will be continued. If students demonstrate struggles, we will stop and work through problems as a group. All problems will be reviewed on the screen to show methods of operation to ensure students are understanding how they are getting their answers. Every week supplemental work will be provided for practice to help students use skills. Assessment will be provided at the end of the class to determine mastery. Prerequisite knowledge for success in this class is that students can add and subtract fractions with common denominators and are able to solve fractions not using models. Private tutoring is also available upon request for additional support in this concept. *Please know during the summer this course is offered as a one week course, while during the school year it is offered one class per week
Learning Goals
Students will work with fractions and learn how to add and subtract common and uncommon denominators, review how to simplify using greatest common factor, multiply and divide fractions, as well as how to convert improper and mixed fractions so that they can be added or subtracted.
Other Details
Parental Guidance
While there is no sensitive material in this class, parents are encouraged to ensure students complete practice to take away the most from this course as outside practice will support content learned.
Supply List
Practice sheets will be provided weekly after each session to allow students to practice the skill we reviewed that week. Students will need paper and pencil for each session to work problems out.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

I am a 5th grade math teacher, and have taught math on Outschool since January 2019, in addition to tutored from 6-12 grade in math content including: geometry, algebra, pre-algebra,etc. I have served as a middle school teacher for 8 years, including mathematics. I have worked with various students from various backgrounds to help them master mathematics for over 10 years as a teacher, including private tutoring. I am very familiar with digital learning and how to work with students online, and utilize the chat feature to allow a more inclusive, yet private, learning experience for students in a group setting. I encourage participation to talk through problems and solutions to support interaction and education. I also integrate review for students to practice to show me how they are progressing. I stay on after the session ends if students need a bit more review.
