Class experience

US Grade 5 - 8
Intermediate Level
10 lessons//10 Weeks
 Week 1
Lesson 1
States of Matter
Students will learn about the states of matter and how chemical and physical changes interact with the world.
 Week 2
Lesson 2
Atoms
Students will learn what atoms are, including the history of their discovery.
 Week 3
Lesson 3
Periodic Table
Students will learn about the Periodic Table and how elements are classified based on their properties.
 Week 4
Lesson 4
Atomic Structure
Students will learn about the atomic structure and learn the difference between molecules and compounds. Students will learn about bonds, crystals, and polymers.
 Week 5
Lesson 5
Synthetic Materials
Students will learn about synthetic materials and their impact on society. Students will learn the difference between naturally occurring and synthetic.
 Week 6
Lesson 6
Thermal Energy and Particle Motion
Students will learn about thermal energy and how it impacts the states of matter, or particle motion.
 Week 7
Lesson 7
Particle Behavior and Potential vs. Kinetic Energy
Students will learn about elements and their states of matter at room temperature based on their thermal energies, and the key difference between stored and active energy, also known as potential and kinetic.
 Week 8
Lesson 8
Law of Conservation of Energy
Students will learn about the Law of Conservation of Energy and how matter moves within our world.
 Week 9
Lesson 9
Stoichiometry and Balancing Equations
Students will learn an extension skill from NGSS at the High School level of how to balance equations to show how energy is never lost, but only transferred.
 Week 10
Lesson 10
Project: Chemical Reactions
Students will engage in creating a project to show how chemical processes occur. Students will either get to select from provided activities, or pick an activity of their own to permit engagement and mastery of the science concepts learned in the course, preparing for the next level of NGSS Middle School Physics.

Welcome, eager learners! Get ready to explore the intriguing realms of matter, from its various states and the captivating changes it undergoes, to the intricate world of atomic structure and interactions. Delve into the secrets of the periodic table and uncover the profound significance of the Law of Conservation of Matter.

But that's not all! Brace yourselves for an enriching experience as you tackle scientific engineering practices woven seamlessly throughout the course. These challenges will not only enhance your understanding but also foster your awareness and appreciation of STEM disciplines. Get ready to embark on a journey of discovery and growth!
Greetings! I'm thrilled to introduce myself as an elementary and middle school educator specializing in the fascinating realms of math and science. With eight years of dedicated experience teaching middle school science to students spanning grades 6 through 8, I bring a wealth of knowledge and passion to the classroom.

I am licensed as a science teacher for grades K through 12, and I hold a Masters in Science Education. My approach to teaching is rooted in the belief that learning is most effective when it's relatable and connected to real-world experiences. Instead of relying solely on memorization, I strive to create meaningful connections that resonate with students, making the material easier to understand and retain.

In my classroom, you can expect a carefully crafted flow pattern of instruction. We'll start with the basics, building a strong foundation, and gradually expand into more complex concepts. This method not only aids in comprehension but also supports long-term retention, ensuring that students grasp the material thoroughly.

I am excited to embark on this learning journey together, where curiosity thrives, and knowledge blossoms!
Homework Offered
Students will receive practice materials to support each week's concepts, as well as STEM integrated activities to enhance STEM awareness and skills.
1 - 2 hours per week outside of class
Assessments Offered
Students will be able to, at the end of each unit, complete a digital break out room and complete a quiz for each topic to support academic mastery. Students will also receive a final project to using engineering practices and design their own process to demonstrate mastery.
Grades Offered
For each session, handouts will be readily available including paper and digital copies (via Google Docs with no login required). Additionally, supplemental materials will be accessible to facilitate review between sessions. Plus, all participants will receive videos for each session, ensuring comprehensive learning opportunities for everyone involved.

Please review course information to ensure students may review key concepts with instructor. Students will learn atomic theory and atomic structure. Students will also be given opportunities for laboratory experiments that may require adult supervision. Please review labs and STEM activities each week for safety suggestions.

Please note standards associated with this course come from Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and are designed for a full middle school experience.

Also, please know that no resources will require subscriptions and all log in information will be provided for access.
