In this 6 session class, students each week will participate by exploring Google Earth Projects. Through these classes, students will explore the world, as well as answer questions about each location by navigating through links to learn about famous places. Students will have the ability to navigate through Google Earth as they visit important places in various different projects. This series of ongoing classes will follow the following format: Session 1: The Ancient 7 Wonders of the World, and other well known Wonders referenced in history Session 2: Famous Statues of the World Session 3: The World's Tallest and Deepest points Session 4: The Rainforests of the World Session 5: Under the Sea- deep sea exploration (including famous shipwrecks) Session 6: Famous Monuments During class, the teacher will navigate through the places listed for each week, explaining information and fun facts about each. Students will follow with the teacher during the lesson in their Google Earth program to include interaction and exploration including 3D mode (material presented will be at an introductory level, and students are encouraged to follow along, but for advanced learners, advanced questions will be available for more exploration and independence in this course). After each lesson, students will be able to complete a Kahoot activity based on the lesson they completed. Each week, students will follow the following lesson format for content: Video- students will watch a prerecorded video and complete a notetaker for their records while they watch the video. Answer keys will be provided every Friday. Practice Activity- Students will receive an activity to complete each week, including labeling graphs, reading passages, and more. Daily Questions- Students will receive daily questions (5 a week) to answer in the classroom for a discussion. Students will receive feedback to their answers each week Review Games- Students will receive weekly games from breakoutedu.com to practice their content. Subscriptions are not required to play and weekly links will be provided in the classroom each week by Friday of that week. A final Kahoot review will be provided in the final week for review. Assessment- Students will receive a final assessment in the final week to review content learned from the course to demonstrate mastery. While students do not require any background knowledge for this class about these locations, a tutorial video will be made available prior to class to learn how to navigate through Google Earth and use its features for ease of access during exploration. Students will also be switching between screens, so parental guidance is suggested to help with the transition.
Learning Goals
Students will explore the world and learn about famous places and nature while using Google Earth to explore. Students will become more proficient in using Google Earth.
Other Details
Parental Guidance
Students will be navigating between Google Earth and Outschool platform, please help students prior to class to know how to switch screens. In addition, while all the points selected are meant to not include any sensitive material directly in class, please know students can explore links independently to view more information outside of what is selected for class. Please be aware that some material is sensitive in nature in discussion, such as religious statues, however this will be taught from a secular view to discuss the statues and why they are famous.
Students will be able to navigate through Google Earth on their own, guidance is suggested to ensure students are where they should be in this program. No subscription is required, however if families wish to have the actual Google Earth Project shared, an email will be needed to share for access, but is not required for this course. Kahoot and Google Forms will also be used, but a parent subscription is not required to participate. Links will be provided directly in the classroom for access.
Supply List
Students will have a handout provided the day before each lesson to be printed and completed during class. Students will also have additional activities made available in the classroom for extension of knowledge.
