The book, Jane Eyre, has gripped readers for centuries and is a classic gothic romance novel. "Orphaned as a child, Jane has felt an outcast her whole young life. Her courage is tested once again when she arrives at Thornfield Hall, where she has been hired by the brooding, proud Edward Rochester to care for his ward Adèle. Jane finds herself drawn to his troubled yet kind spirit. She falls in love. Hard. But there is a terrifying secret inside the gloomy, forbidding Thornfield Hall. Is Rochester hiding from Jane? Will Jane be left heartbroken and exiled once again?" Summary from Goodreads.com. In this class, the teacher will provide relevant background information about the setting of the novel and lead a discussion of the book. The book was written in the early 1800s so the teacher will provide relevant historical context and lessons on the gothic and horror genres. Through reading and answering discussion questions in the classroom, we will explore the plot, character development, themes, symbols, and other literary devices. The book contains mentions of death, child abuse, mental illness, violence, and emotional abuse. These topics will be handled with a trauma-informed approach.
