Class Experience
This initial course will be a deep dive into early medieval music and the culture surrounding it. We will start with the first written music which appears in the medieval era within the catholic church. This will entail discussing compositional techniques of the time, how they first established written music, prominent composers of the time, and what inspired the original music. Students will learn a bit about medieval culture, how medieval music came to be, prominent composers of the time, and what early music looked like.
I have a Bachelor's degree in Music specifically brass performance, with a focus in music history, culture and gender studies. I am also pursuing a Master's of Music History and Literature.
A notebook and pencil are encouraged for students to get the most out of this course.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
This class will be based on informal assessment of the information, questions asked by the teacher and the students answering to the best of their abilities but no formal grades will be provided. Parents can request a formal report of their student.
30 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
There will be no graphic images portrayed in this class, but it is important to note that because this is a music history and culture study topics such as gender, religion, and other cultures may be brought up but always in an objective and respectful manner.
There is no required books, all material will be provided by me through research based on prominent musicologists and the Norton music history textbook.
