Class Experience

US Grade 1 - 2
Beginner Level
Introduce your learner to multiplication gently with the Forest Multiplication Adventure class.

This introductory course teaches students that multiplication is repeated addition that can be solved with skip counting and other simple ways to recognize patterns. While memorization is the common way to learn multiplication facts, I think adding the element of storytelling and drills is useful for making the concept make sense to young learners.

1: Multiplication by 0, 1,
2: Multiplication by 2
3: Multiplication by 3
4: Review of 1-3

I highly encourage learners to come to class with one or all of the following:
manipulatives {blocks},
abacus,
paper and something to write with,
and a bit of imagination.

This forest camp adventure is designed to educate young learners while being interesting.

Before enrolling in this class, students should have strong mastery of adding, subtracting, and have been introduced to skip counting by 2 and 3.

If there is sufficient interest in a Part 2, a new adventure will be created to continue with multiplication factors 4-6.

Drills will be incorporated into lessons if deemed useful.
Learning Goals
At the end of this adventure children should understand:
1. Anything multiplied by zero is zero.
2. Anything multiplied by one is the same number.
3. How to use at least two methods to figure out how to solve multiplication by 2 or 3.
4. Be able to complete the attached worksheets with minimal help from parents/educators.
