45 mins in-class hoursClass Experience
Welcome to the next chapter of our Symphony Journey! This class is a follow-up class for Part 1, where we learned about strings and woodwind instruments, but it’s not necessary to take the classes in order. Here’s the link for Part 1: https://outschool.com/classes/inside-the-symphony-exploring-the-instruments-of-the-orchestra-part-1-LzgixSF3#usNrQ7u1WI In Part 1 of this class, we learned about the beautiful melodies of string and woodwind instruments. In this class, we’ll learn about the big, grand world of brass and percussion instruments! As we introduce each group, we’ll take a closer look at individual instruments and discuss what makes them unique, including the history and science behind them. Learners will become familiar with instrument sounds by listening to examples from well-known classical melodies and popular film score music. At the end of class, we’ll sharpen our listening skills by guessing which instruments made different sounds in a light-hearted game. We'll hear some music from films such as: Avengers Star Wars The Incredibles Indiana Jones And more! No musical experience is necessary! If students do have a background in music or play an instrument, they are welcome to explain to the class what makes their instrument special.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Doctoral Degree in Music or Theatre or Arts from Louisiana State University
Hello! I'm Dr. Katie Troy and I absolutely love playing cello and teaching about music! I have over 18 years of playing and performing experience and I recently earned my Doctorate of Musical Arts in Cello Performance from LSU. I am also a Certified Music Practitioner, which means I can play healing music at the bedside of patients in hospitals.
I'm here to bring the love of music to your students by helping them improve their knowledge, technique, and sense of musicality in a fun, individualized way.
A fun fact about me is that I’m also a llama trainer, so I help llamas get ready to go on big adventures in the mountains! I love hiking with them in beautiful places and laughing at their fun personalities.
I can’t wait to meet your students so we can start learning together!
