In this group composition class, students will learn the basics of writing music. They will get comfortable using the notation program "Flat for Music Education", learn the basics of creating musical phrases, and will create a short melodic solo piece by the end of the class for their instrument of choice. (The notation program has playback capabilities, so no need to play or have an instrument). They will also have the opportunity to share their work as we go and learn from each other. The basic breakdown of weekly topics is as follows: Week 1: Intro to notation program, writing basic motifs, brainstorming. Week 2: Composing musical phrases and sentences Week 3: Exploring musical forms, putting things together Week 4: Sharing our work, wrapping things up, discussion The skills learned in class can be applied to continue writing music even after the course is finished!

Teacher expertise and credentials
Doctoral Degree in Music or Theatre or Arts from Louisiana State University
I have a Doctorate of Musical Arts degree from LSU with a doctoral minor in music composition. I studied composition in my undergraduate degree as my minor as well and am currently studying with Dr. Joseph Sowa at the Wizarding School for Composers.
One of my recent compositions, "Runaway Llama Train" for English Horn and Piano, was recently accepted for publishing by TrevCo Music, the world's premier publisher of double reed music. Another composition, "Suite of the Hippopotamus" for cello and tuba, had its European premiere this past January in Budapest, Hungary. I am also actively working on a solo cello piece to be played by Gloria Lum, a cellist in the LA Philharmonic.
