Homework
1-2 hours per week. Amount and type of homework will vary based on experience level. Beginners can expect to start with less than an hour of work per week, while advanced students may want to spend more time working on their pieces.Class Experience
This class will differ based on each learner's individual goals, but the basic structure will likely look as follows: 1st meeting: Discuss goals/experience, brainstorming, introduction to relevant musical concepts, getting to know the online notation program we will be using, Flat for Music Education. (If you already have another notation program, that is fine too). 2nd meeting: Learners who are new to composition will be walked through necessary steps towards writing music. Experienced composers will either receive guidance for current music they are working on or start working on a new piece. Following meetings will continue working towards individual goals. Activities may include: Short composition motif and phrase writing activities, score study, brainstorming activities, explorations of musical form, reviewing composition assignments from previous weeks, etc.
Learning Goals
Students will learn basic principles of composition, understand how to write for a variety of instruments/voices, and create music they are connected to and excited about sharing.
Other Details
Parental Guidance
We will be using the online music program Flat for Education, which is COPPA, FERPA, and GDPR compliant and is often used by students in school music programs. This is how we will be writing music and doing notation/theory assignments.
If you already have a notation software (Finale, Sibelius, Dorico, MuseScore, NoteFlight, etc.) that is fine too!
Pre-Requisites
It is helpful to have an understanding of basic music notation, but we can spend the first few lessons focusing on these skills if not.
Supply List
Upon enrollment in the class, I will send you details on how to log in to Flat for Music Education. This platform has many resources, which includes music composition software that makes it easy to collaborate and share music during our lessons. It has no additional cost to you as I have an education account for my students to use.
Teacher expertise and credentials
Doctoral Degree in Music or Theatre or Arts from Louisiana State University
I have a Doctorate of Musical Arts degree from LSU with a doctoral minor in music composition. I studied composition in my undergraduate degree as my minor as well and am currently studying with Dr. Joseph Sowa at the Wizarding School for Composers.
One of my recent compositions, "Runaway Llama Train" for English Horn and Piano, was recently accepted for publishing by TrevCo Music, the world's premier publisher of double reed music. Another composition, "Suite of the Hippopotamus" for cello and tuba, had its European premiere this past January in Budapest, Hungary. I am also actively working on a solo cello piece to be played by Gloria Lum, a cellist in the LA Philharmonic.
