What's included
1 live meeting
30 mins in-class hours per weekHomework
1-2 hours per week. Students will be expected to practice and prepare for their performances outside of class time.Class Experience
When students are learning an instrument, it helps to have regular performance goals to work towards and a small community to support and encourage them. In this class, we will learn about effective practice strategies, how to perform at your best, and other string related topics as we practice performing for each other! We will also learn about giving kind and constructive feedback to each other and create a supportive community where we can all learn and improve. The structure of each class is subject to change depending on the group size and interests, but most classes will look something like this: - Getting to know you question/activity - Performances from anyone who would like to play (with optional constructive feedback sessions from the group) - String-related mini-lessons, discussions, or tips from Dr. Troy, depending on how long performances take. Here are the general themes of mini-lessons or discussions for the upcoming weeks: Week of 10/1: Effective Practice Strategies Week of 10/8: Performance 101 Week of 10/15: Rhythm Week of 10/22: Intonation Students don't have to have an entire piece learned in order to perform it- they can start with a portion of a piece, or even a scale to get used to playing for other people. They are welcome to perform every week, but are not obligated to. This class is open to all string players: violinists, violists, cellists, and double bassists. It is open to all levels, but they should have at least some experience on their instrument and be able to play short melodies so they have something to play.
Learning Goals
Students will gain performance experience, learn about effective practice, get practice talking about music, and experience giving and receiving kind, constructive feedback.
