Class Experience

US Grade 2 - 5
This is a one on one math tutoring class, meant to help individual learners with math skills throughout the semester or school year. Sometimes a student just needs a different approach or some individual help in order to excel and flourish in a given area.

**This class is 60 minutes and meets once per week for 8 weeks. If you need a class that meets on a different schedule, please let me know. I plan to follow a common-core grade-level guide to make sure students are learning the appropriate concepts for the given grade level. If you would like me to follow a specific school or classroom curriculum, please contact me in advance and provide the curriculum guidelines or topics. I am happy to do my best to meet the requirements for different curriculums.

I love math - but it hasn't always been that way. I had a few great teachers who helped me understand and enjoy math. I would like to help students gain more understanding for concepts that may be a struggle. Everyone understands differently and learners sometimes just need a different approach to make that happen.

We will begin each class with a quick 5-minute review of the previous lesson to help reinforce the lessons and learning. This is a great time for students to ask questions about the homework, or ask about something they didn't quite comprehend from the previous lesson. We will then jump into the new material with examples, models, and different learning methods. I will have two screens so students can see me, but also see a close-up view of the math problems we will be working on together. Learners will be given practice problems and we will come up with different problems, questions, and scenarios to work on together and individually.

I ask that students keep their cameras on (unless there is a specific concern and a parent/guardian requests this directly) for this class so I am able to see the students. I look for understanding in their eyes as opposed to a lost look. It is really hard for me to know how much the student is understanding the lesson if I cannot see them.

Many students need extra help, understanding, or practice with math facts: addition, subtraction, multiplication or division facts. Working with geometry, fractions and decimals, or finding the LCM (lowest common multiple) and GCF (greatest common factor) often cause confusion. I have fun games and activities to help reinforce these facts and concepts. If there are specific fact families that are tough and need practice, we will work toward getting those up to speed.

If your student needs help with homework or specific assignments, please let me know and send me a copy of the math homework or assignments. I would be happy to assist with whatever would be most helpful for the student. I want to connect with the learners and let them know that I care about them individually and and want them to succeed.

Learners or parents should send a message upon enrollment to discuss the needs of the learner (specifying areas that come easy for the student as well as areas in which the student struggles). I would be happy to do a quick assessment at the beginning of class to know where it would be best to begin working.
Learning Goals
Students will feel more confident in their math skills and understand the concepts in their grade-level curriculum after working together.

Supply List
Students will need either a notebook, lined paper, or blank paper for writing. If students use lined or blank paper, it would be helpful for them to have a folder to keep all of their work together. They will also need a pencil and a good eraser.

If we are working with graphs or geometry, it would be helpful for the student to have graph paper if possible.

I will typically send pages for guided notes and homework assignments for each class. These can be printed or used electronically.

Occasionally there will be papers to print from other websites (depending on the needs of the learner), which will be free and the link will be provided.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
