Class Experience

This course is the 4th in a series of dyslexia courses I offer. If students have already begun dyslexia lessons with me in my 'Yes, I Have Dyslexia, Yes I CAN Read parts 1 & 2" they must complete both of those prior to enrolling. All students must have completed "Improving Reading Skills for Students with Dyslexia - part 1" prior to enrolling in this course.

This course is designed to help students with dyslexia or other reading disabilities. Students who struggle in the following areas of reading would benefit from this course:
- difficulty recognizing common sight words
- difficulty decoding single words
- difficulty recalling the correct sounds for letters and letter patterns in reading
- difficulty connecting speech sounds with appropriate letter or letter combinations and omitting letters in words for spelling
- difficulty reading fluently
- difficulty decoding unfamiliar words in sentences using knowledge of phonics
- reliance on picture clues, story theme, or guessing at words
- difficulty with written expression

In this course, we will break down the phonics and phonemic awareness skills that are necessary for reading success. Each lesson will follow the same routine; phonological awareness, alphabet, high frequency words, morphemes, letter sounds/sound patterns, reading practice, and handwriting. Some of the things that students will work on are:
- consonant combinations
- syllable division
- vowel pair syllables
- vowel consonant-e syllables
- open syllables
- long vowels

This class is one that requires students to print off a manual so they can follow along and work on their handwriting. Students will participate in activities that require them to write as well as activities that are oral. Many of these activities are done through listening and speaking games. This class is designed for students in grades 2-3.

I am a special education teacher and have been trained in working specifically with students with dyslexia. This course is designed to move at the pace of it's learners. We constantly practice skills so that they become second nature to students and so that students feel successful! Reading is hard. Dyslexia and other disabilities can make it even harder. My goal is to provide your child with the skills they need to become successful readers!

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hi everyone!
My name is Katherine Gillott but please feel free to call me Katie. I am a certified teacher in both Texas and California. I live in the Southern California area with my husband and our 4 (yes, 4) dogs!

I teach all elementary levels and subjects (grades PK - 5), but my specialty is teaching reading. I love teaching students how to read and seeing the excitement that comes from mastering such an important life skill! I believe that no two children are alike which means that no two children learn the same way. One of my goals as an educator, is to ensure that every child, no matter what their background may be, receives a quality education. Every child is capable of learning and as a teacher it is my responsibility to make that happen, even if it requires some out of the box thinking!

I do currently work full time outside of Outschool so my class availability is currently pretty limited! If there is a certain class/section you are interested in, please do not hesitate to reach out and I will do my best to work with you to meet your needs!
