Class Description: Reading Foundations for Beginners
UFLI Scope and Sequence (Ages 4-6)

The Reading Foundations program is designed to help young learners build strong reading skills from the ground up. This engaging 10-week class is perfect for children who are just starting their reading journey or need extra support to develop their phonics and early literacy skills. Through fun activities, hands-on exercises, and individualized attention, we will ensure that every child has the foundation they need to become a confident, fluent reader.

What Will Be Taught?
Each week, we will focus on key areas of early literacy, including phonemic awareness, phonics, letter recognition, blending sounds, and more. Your child will:

Learn the names and sounds of each letter
Build simple CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words and rhyming words
Practice decoding and encoding skills (reading and spelling)
Work with high-frequency words (heart words)
Explore short and long vowel sounds and their impact on words
Understand word patterns through blending drills and word chains
Topics Covered:

Phonemic Awareness: Recognizing and isolating sounds in words.
Phonics: Learning how letters and sounds work together.
Letter Formation: Writing letters correctly while associating sounds.
Word Building: Blending sounds to create words and sentences.
Rhyming: Identifying rhyming words and patterns in reading.
High-Frequency Words: Introducing sight words like “the,” “and,” and “in.”
Vowel Sounds: Differentiating between short and long vowels.
Word Patterns: Understanding how words are built using onsets and rimes.

Class Structure: Each class is structured to balance focused lessons and interactive activities.

The class will be a mix of:

°New Concepts: Short, engaging lessons where I introduce new concepts.
°Hands-on Activities: Children will engage in guided activities, such as letter and word building with flashcards, magnetic letters, and fun worksheets.
°Games & Activities: Educational games will help reinforce the concepts learned, such as word-building challenges, rhyming races, and letter-matching games.
°One-on-One Attention: During each class, I will make sure that each child gets the opportunity to work at their own pace. I’ll offer personalized guidance as they practice their skills, ensuring they understand each lesson before moving on to the next.

Teaching Style: My teaching style is interactive, supportive, and encouraging. I believe that learning to read should be fun and enjoyable, so I incorporate lots of hands-on learning, visual aids, and games into each session. I create a safe, nurturing environment where children feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes, and celebrating their progress. Every child learns differently, and I adapt my approach to meet their needs, offering positive reinforcement and personalized guidance.

Learner Interaction: In this class, learners will have plenty of opportunities to interact with me and each other. Here’s how:

Direct Interaction: I will guide children through activities, offering one-on-one help where necessary.

Games and Group Activities: Students will participate in small group activities, encouraging them to practice their reading skills with their peers.

Live Feedback: I’ll provide immediate feedback as children work through tasks, correcting errors and praising their successes.

Discussion: At the end of each class, we’ll have a short discussion where students can share what they learned and ask questions about the content.

Visual and Audio Aids: I’ll use visual slides, songs, puppets to make lessons more engaging and support different learning styles.

By the end of this course, your child will have a strong foundation in the key areas of reading and phonics, setting them up for success as they continue to grow as readers. The interactive nature of this class ensures that each child feels supported, engaged, and motivated throughout their reading journey!

Learning Goals

Recognize and Name Letters: Students will be able to recognize both uppercase and lowercase letters and correctly identify their sounds (phonemes).
Phonemic Awareness: Students will develop the ability to isolate, blend, and segment sounds in simple words, strengthening their foundational listening and decoding skills.

Lesson 1:
Learning Letter Sounds
4 letters a week will be introduced as a vowel or consonant. They will be taught where to find them in words and how to say each letter properly through articulatory gestures. They will learn a song for each letter as well as learning to form the letter by writing it.
We will finish with a beginning letter sound game.

Lesson 2:
Introducing Phonemic Awareness
We begin by reviewing what we've already learned. Learn a new letter and song and play a beginning letter sound game. Introduce a new concept - phonemic awareness - kids will learn to blend and segment our first 2 letter words.
40 mins online live lesson
Lesson 3:
Introducing Irregular Words
We begin by reviewing what we've already learned and add a letter. New concept - we introduce our first irregular word. Kids will be shown how to tap out the sounds they hear in each word and identify the sounds they know and the tricky parts they will need to learn by heart. Kids will be given a practice sheet to help them identify tricky parts of irregular words and turn them into heart words. This sheet can be laminated or put into a sleeve to use to practice our many irregular words.
40 mins online live lesson
Lesson 4:
Introducing Visual and Auditory Drills and CVC Words
We begin by reviewing what we've already learned with our four letters. Today we start visual (grapheme) drill and auditory (phoneme) drill so kids can quickly begin to recognize the letter sound and shape. We will also introduce our second irregular heart word. We will learn to read and spell our VC and CVC words. Start creating a word list.

Hello Parents and Students!

My name is Lori MacWhirter, but my students call me Miss Lori.

I am a mom of 5 grown children and a grandma to 10 amazing grandchildren. When I'm not teaching I am spending time with them.

I have been teaching for over 30 years. I homeschooled my own kids and worked as a family therapist, and I v'e work in kinder garden in public school and also taught in a Montessori school with children 3-6. I also have online classes for teaching life skills and learning pods and personal tutoring for foundational reading.

I incorporate the Science of Reading with Montessori principles to offer a systematic, streamlined reading curriculum to move children quickly, from letter sounds to reading.

I am very passionate about teaching. I especially love seeing kids self-esteem grow as they build confidence in themselves while learning to read.

I think learning should be fun and I often have my friend Kermit the frog join me to teach letter sounds. Kermit is a great teacher. He loves to eat up all the letters and get you to try and guess the sound they make when they are in his throat. He's so funny!

We will have such a good time together. You are going to be so proud of the things you can do by the end of our classes.

We hope to see you soon!
