What's included

15 live meetings
12 hrs 30 mins in-class hours
Homework
2-4 hours per week. PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE WITH IEW THROUGH UNIT 5 REQUIRED. Each week there will be a writing assignment. It is strongly encouraged that students complete all of the assignments. Every child differs greatly where they are in the writing journey and homework can take 2-5 hrs depending on assignment and child. Please note that the work load in Semester 2 is more than Semester 1 and proper time for completing assignments is necessary for students success. Each week students turn in 3 things. 1. Keyword Outline (KWO) 2. IEW Checklist 3. Final Draft of their paper Please Note that students and/or parents need to know how to upload attachments (PDF or Pictures) and how to use basic functions of Google Docs. All of these steps will be demonstrated in class for students
Assessment
I welcome and encourage students to submit their papers for feedback in this class! To help students understand exactly what's expected in each paper, we'll be using the IEW checklist method. Following the checklist is highly recommended and will help students produce high-quality writing. As the instructor, my role is to review each paper and provide positive, constructive feedback. I won't be assigning letter or percentage grades, as the focus of the class is on developing writing skills and improving structure and style. While basic spelling and punctuation are expected, don't worry about being perfect - the most important thing is to keep working on your writing and making progress. To assess the writing process, I'll be reviewing students' Keyword Outlines and Checklists. And when it comes time to submit final drafts, I'll provide comments and feedback right in Google Docs to help students improve their writing even further. Remember, the goal is to develop your skills and become a better writer, and I'm here to support and guide you every step of the way

Class Experience

US Grade 4 - 7
Beginner - Intermediate Level
PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE WITH IEW THROUGH UNIT 5 REQUIRED.

IEW is a comprehensive writing program that focuses on 9 STRUCTURAL models of writing as well as STYLISTIC techniques to enhance writing. Part 2 of this course focuses on Units 6-9.

During class, we will read source texts together. I will introduce new concepts and model how it is done. We will discuss and work as a class to complete a sample together. We will brainstorm, play games, and have some fun reinforcing all that's taught. Once we have begun writing papers students will have an opportunity to share their writing with their peers. Along the way, students will learn how to add style to their sentences and papers with dress-ups, varied sentence openers, and literary decorations.

For Weeks 1, 2, & 3 we will cover Unit 6. Students will learn how to organize and synthesize a large amount of information. They will Key Word Outline from multiple sources on 2-3 topics. They will practice FUSING this information before they write their paper.

During Weeks 4, 5, 6, & 7, Unit 7 will invite some creativity for students but also teaches the final steps of the 5 paragraph model, the Introduction and Conclusion

In Unit 8 Weeks 8, 12, 13, & 14 students will use past papers to practice completing a 5 paragraph essay. Then they will write a complete essay with ALL of the elements of structure and style. Students will be required to find outside sources for this research paper.

Weeks 9, 10, & 11 Unit 9 will combine the skills of Unit 3 storytelling, Unit 7 Introduction, and Conclusion and teach students how to properly critique a story not just retell it. We will also introduce character analysis.

Week 15 Students will present papers in class.

I'm a dedicated educator with over a decade of experience teaching IEW. My passion is to make writing engaging and enjoyable for my students, and I strive to bring creativity and interactivity to every lesson.

As a parent of three children, I've had the opportunity to use the IEW program at home and have walked my own kids through the program. This personal experience has given me a unique perspective and deep understanding of the challenges that students and families may face in the writing process.

In my classes, I aim to create a supportive and dynamic learning environment that encourages students to take risks and develop their own unique voice as writers. I believe that with the right guidance and support, every student has the potential to become a skilled and confident writer.

Whether in the classroom or at home, I'm dedicated to making writing a positive and rewarding experience for all students, and I'm excited to share my knowledge and passion with you.
