What is the difference between a bug and a spider? Many people think spiders are insects, but they are not! In this class, we will learn how to tell bugs from spiders by comparing and contrasting qualities of both. We will observe a variety of real deceased insect specimen and note what body parts they all have in common. Then we will see a resin cast of a spider and learn about spider body parts. Learners will next compare what they observed about insects and spiders, and discover the differences between these two animals. Feel free to bring your own insect and spider specimen to share with the class! Coloring sheets will be provided to help learners retain the different body parts of bugs and spiders.
Learning Goals
Students will be able to identify if the creepy crawly they see scuttling in their homes is an insect or spider.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Bachelor's Degree in English Language and Literature from Randolph College
Hello, everyone!
I’m Cricket, they/them. I graduated from Randolph College with a B.A. in English, with honors.
Here on OutSchool, I primarily teach private weekly ukulele and guitar classes for beginners who would like one-on-one instruction that matches their learning pace. We will learn chords and tableture through covers of fun songs. I offer a wide variety of songs, and will do my best to find songs your students request. Music has been a passion of mine since I was small. I have seven years of classical piano experience, which helped me learn to play other stringed instruments.
Over the past decade, I have enjoyed teaching a wide range of subjects both in person and virtually to learners of all ages, from toddlers to seniors.
During my time with an in-person homeschool group, I taught kindergarten through middle school, covering a variety of subjects including English, math, physics, entomology, and Earth science. One of my most cherished experience there was helping kindergarten and first-grade students learn to read.
Additionally, I was part of a nonprofit organization for a decade, delivering environmental education programs to community members of all ages. I developed and lead after-school programs, field trips, birthday parties, and community programs, teaching about animals, biology, ecology, and environmental awareness.
I strive to inspire a love of learning in the next generations. My teaching philosophy is to teach how to think, not what to think. My classes are more of a conversation than a lecture. Growing up as a homeschooler has allowed me to have an interdisciplinary approach to learning. I do not see class subjects as separate boxes, but rather as a whole connecting with each other.
My classroom environment is relaxed, calm, and patient. And I am supportive of any pronouns your child is comfortable using.
