Class Experience

US Grade 3 - 6
This ongoing biology class is all about insects, spiders and other arthropods. Over 80% of all species of animals are arthropods, such as insects and we will learn about a different family or species of arthropod every week. There are so many exciting things to discover about the biology of each of these animals. We will learn how to recognize each arthropod group, how these animals live and how these animals are adapted to their environment.
Each class will begin with an introduction of the arthropod of the week. We will start with a quick classification of the animal to see where it fits into the phylum Arthropoda. Then we will learn how to recognize the arthropod and examine its body structure and explore different parts of the animal's biology, such as its behaviour and its habitat.
This class will be very interactive. I enjoy questions and discussions and I like to encourage learners to make parallels with things they already know and to question the world around them. My aim is to transmit my passion for biology to the learners. I will use slides with a lot of pictures and diagrams so that learners can easily follow and stay interested.
I want learners to have fun with the topic, but still walk away with accurate scientific information.
No prior knowledge of the topic is required for this class. Classes do not build on each other so learners can join at any time.
I am open to requests from learners for specific arthropods they would like to learn about in the future.
