US Grade 9 - 12
Level C (high 8th grade- 9th, 10th, possibly 11th grade) Students CAN begin this class without prior IEW experience. There will be a LOT of writing in this class, so plan on at least two hours outside of class each week. The class is based on this IEW class, Level C, Year 1: https://iew.com/shop/products/structure-and-style-students-year-1-level-c-basic-forever-streaming-or-dvd You will need to purchase the pages for $29, so that we do not break copyright.: https://iew.com/shop/products/structure-and-style-students-year-1-level-c-student-packet-only You do NOT need to buy the streaming videos from IEW. Instead of watching the videos, I will teach it live. Generally, in each class we share writing, learn a new structure for writing, practice new skills, and have a little time to write at the end of class. We will discuss and write about the suggested literature. You can download a sample of the weekly curriculum above. Fix It Grammar is not included in this class, though we do practice grammar. For the suggested grammar: https://outschool.com/classes/swim-to-grammar-success-with-little-mermaid-IlCcViyN#usxPqAuK2O (If Little Mermaid is too difficult for your child, try Frog Prince.) We will cover Units 1-5 and the suggested literature in this class. Units 6-9 will be covered in another similar class in the spring. Approximate schedule: Weeks 1-2, Units 1 and 2, note-taking and writing from notes Weeks 3-5, Unit 3, narratives Weeks 6-7, Unit 4, fusing outlines Weeks 8- 10, Unit 5, writing from pictures Students must plan on spending 1-3 hours outside of class to keep up with the reading and writing. They will have work to complete on their own after every class. At the beginning of each class, students may share their work if they have produced a final copy. I will not be editing/ grading the papers because students learn by practicing and sharing. If a student completes the checklist correctly, the student has met the suggested requirements for that paper and should earn an "A". (Andrew Pudewa, the founder of IEW, suggests students work with an outside editor/parent to complete and edit the assignments.) If you would like papers graded, you can sign up for one of my individual sessions. If you are enrolled in this class with me, an individual session is half price. Grading WITH them enables them to immediately see and correct their mistakes. We need to have 8 students of various levels for this class because it involves discussion and sharing of ideas. I know many of you are planning for high school and need to know if this class will actually happen. I will let you know by August 3, 2023 if this class is happening or not, based on the number of enrollments. ****** At this time (I'm writing this in March 2023), I plan to use Googledocs with the students so they can easily share their work with me and I can see it in class while we are writing. I can edit with them in real time. I plan to set up their documents and share with them. Please be sure you are OK with this kind of sharing of work in the Google system.
Learning Goals
Students will learn note-taking, creating narratives, and begin fusing outlines for report writing.

Teacher expertise and credentials
UPDATE FOR SUMMER and FALL 2024: My video refers to the 2022-23 school year, but I'm still here! I am super happy to be starting my last year of law school. I will take the bar exam in July 2025.
FIX IT Grammar: In Fall 2024, I will teach all of Book 2 and 3, and the first half of 4 and 5. In spring 2025, I will teach the second half of 4 and 5.
WRITING: For fall 2024, my semester-long classes will use the Modern World History-Based Writing Lessons book from IEW. https://iew.com/modern-world-history-based-writing-lessons-student-book-only
If you want to see if we are a good fit before committing to a long class, drop in on one of my ongoing Friday classes!
I help children overcome their fear of failure, and I coach strong writers to continued excellence. Once children grasp specific writing concepts, they can apply their skills to all content areas. Mostly, I use the writing methods taught by the Institute for Excellence in Writing.
My youngest daughter is dyslexic and in my search to help her organize and communicate her thoughts, I discovered the writing methods of IEW. Over the last 17 years, I have studied and taught these writing methods at my kitchen table, in homeschool co-ops, and in private tutoring. Most recently, I taught IEW for seven years to middle schoolers at a public charter school in Southern California. I am currently a Registered Instructor with IEW.
I graduated from the University of Maryland with an Elementary Education degree, but I've learned way more from my own kids and hundreds of others than I ever learned in a college classroom.
Having taught on two coasts, in public, private, charter, and homeschool co-ops, I have a breadth of experience.
My classes are "pretty fun for a writing class," my students report, but they don't feel like recess. Students will practice significant writing, grammar, organizing, outlining, and speaking skills in my classes. If your child needs support, recovery, or challenge, check out my classes.
