How to Summarize What You Read: Part 1

I am offering this class to provide reading comprehension support for students scoring below expectations on reading achievement tests. The ability to read and summarize increases a student's ability to reach proficient reading levels. Strong summarization skills increase long-term memory as reading comprehension levels improve. The credentials that make me a good teacher for this class include a reading specialist credential with an emphasis on reading in the content areas, a language development specialist credential, and an English language arts specialist credential.
Homework Offered
Students will complete a summary of an article covered in session two. The summary will be presented to the instructor for feedback during session three.1 - 2 hours per week outside of class
Assessments Offered
Students will be assessed on the completion of an article summary using the four elements of summary writing presented in sessions one and two.Grades Offered
5 files available upon enrollmentStudents will need to provide the following materials: • Pencils • Crayons • Drawing paper • Highlighter • Lined paper • A folder for class work Hand-outs include copies of two informative articles, a practice summarization graph, and a quiz for the end of the class evaluation. Access to all hand-outs posted in the classroom become available for printing after registration in the class.
